The set moved 75,000 units in its first frame, making it the highest-bowing new entry on the chart this week (dated Aug. 8) — though it falls behind Morgan Wallen’s I’m the Problem and Olivia Rodrigo’s You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, in their 63rd and seventh week on the chart, respectively.

How does this debut compare to our expectations for Music, Fashion, Film? Charli xcx’s Music, Fashion, Film bows at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 this week with 75,000 first-week units, tying the mark she set in 2024 with her previous album Brat. But given that it’s an experimental rock album — not always a barnburner of a genre on this chart — I think No. 3 feels just about right.

Eric Renner Brown: I am not surprised by this number in a vacuum, but I am surprised the number didn’t exceed Brat‘s first-week tally. Charli’s fans got Brat immediately, but it wasn’t an instant hit; Brat summer didn’t truly hit until a couple weeks after its release. Considering how much Charli’s star rose with Brat, I would’ve thought these first-week numbers would be higher – but perhaps her releasing the Wuthering Heights soundtrack earlier this year took some of the wind out of Music, Fashion, Film’s sails.

Kyle Denis: Considering the stark change in musical direction and the lack of a true breakout hit, these numbers are about what I expected from Music, Fashion, Film.

Lyndsey Havens: I would have expected a post-Brat boost into a six-figure debut week. But I think anything that isn’t a drop off is excellent for Charli — or any artist, really — and well worth celebrating. Plus, that 75,000 figure becomes more impressive when you consider how stripped back this album’s rollout was in comparison to Brat; Charli not only created a vastly different world in terms of sound and visuals, but also in terms of how she presented and promoted it to the world. The fact that this lesser approach still yielded such a strong debut week speaks well to interest surrounding the music itself.

Andrew Unterberger: No. 3 is actually maybe a little higher than I would have expected, particularly once the singles (and B-sides) started to trickle out and it was clear what a new and occasionally challenging sound this was gonna be for Charli. I think we’ve seen both with this rollout and the one for Wuthering Heights this year that as big as Charli is, she’s not the kind of artist where every single thing she releases is gonna go gangbusters on the charts. To still get within striking distance of No. 1 with an album like Music, Fashion, Film is a pretty big accomplishment.

 2. Based on the cultural ubiquity of Brat and Charli’s general name-brand recognition at this point, casual fans might have expected her new album to cruise to No. 1. What do you think is the biggest reason Music, Fashion, Film instead lands at No. 3 behind two albums that have been out for some time already?

Katie Bain: It’s an interesting case, because Brat was in and of itself an anomaly in Charli’s trajectory — the massive hit she’d been aiming for but fell slightly short of with Crash (which hit No. 7), as well as some of her preceding albums. In that way, Music, Fashion, Film — an album she made abundantly clear was a 180 from Brat — hitting a very respectable No. 3 demonstrates her sustained influence, and the dedicated fans she picked up during the Brat cycle.

Eric Renner Brown: Ultimately, while Charli is massive in certain circles (cough, terminally online music writers, cough) and can headline major festivals, she still is orders of magnitude smaller than some of her megastar contemporaries. While they might operate on entirely different cultural planes, Morgan Wallen is one of those contemporaries. So is Olivia Rodrigo. With a more conventional album and promotional cycle, Charli might have challenged them on the chart, but a No. 1 that required surpassing Wallen and Rodrigo was always going to be a longshot.

Kyle Denis: The cultural ubiquity of Brat could understandably be attributed to a plethora of elements, but I’ll focus on two: 1) immediate, catchy songs and 2) a simple, magnetic aesthetic. Music, Fashion, Film lacks both of those things, and they’re quite necessary for a pop star who’s never been a monster album-seller. As sleek and moody as the new album’s imagery is, nothing pulls you in the way that Brat-green did… and still does.

I also think the early controversy regarding Charli’s “supposed” rock pivot led to the new record stalling at No. 3; a host of new consumers who encountered Charli as the 365 EDM party girl were suddenly asked to anticipate a pivot that wasn’t nearly as drastic as those early conversations implied.

Lyndsey Havens: Not that any of us know, but I feel that Charli wasn’t even angling for a No. 1 debut. The narrative around this album — that she wasn’t intending to even make it but rather felt so inspired that she had to — only contributes to the idea that she was making this for herself. No one else, and surely not the charts. (Further evidence: she’s offering a total of two — just two — vinyl variants.) I think that’s probably the biggest reason — but I also think it’s worth considering that while Brat surely reconfigured Charli’s place in pop music and culture, she’s always leaned left of center. I like the idea that she can score top Grammy nominations, headline festivals and then still make art that’s experimental enough that it’s not a guaranteed No. 1.

Andrew Unterberger: She’s just not really a streaming powerhouse — her music is maybe a little too edgy, a little too specific for that kind of lean-back playlisting or autoplay ubiquity. Combine that with the album only being 10 tracks long, and her not going too hard with the variants or other potential sales-goosers, and 75,000 is still a fairly impressive first-week number.

 3. From the first advance single — literally titled “Rock Music” — much has been made of whether or not this album would represent Charli’s pivot from dance to rock. Based on the album we got, did she attempt that pivot — and if so, did she succeed?

Katie Bain: Yeah, big time. I’m not hearing anything for the club, and to my ears this is a pretty pure rock and indie rock album, a genre flip that’s not totally surprising given how many times Charli has cited Lou Reed as an influence. The connective tissue between the two albums is, for me, the confessional and hyper-specific nature of the lyrics — a Charli signature and one of the major reasons her music is so interesting across any genre.

Eric Renner Brown: She did pivot and she did succeed. This is a rock album in the same way Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter was a country album – gatekeepers will say it isn’t squarely in that genre, but largely due to prejudices against pop stars and perceived “interlopers.” At the same time, Charli didn’t make a White Stripes or Rolling Stones album. There is a deep pop (and dance!) sensibility here that means that, aesthetic choices notwithstanding, Music, Film, Fashion is still firmly of a piece with the rest of Charli’s catalog.

Kyle Denis: I consider Music, Fashion, Film more as Charli’s take on an “analog” pop record and less as a genuine stab at making a “rock” album. She’s clearly drawing on electronic rock, pop-rock, and light punk aesthetics across the record, but it’s largely as pop as Sucker was. I’d say this record was a successful recalibration of her sound and (likely) fanbase, but it’s not a pivot into a new sonic space — or at least not one I’m convinced she’ll remain in beyond this era.

Lyndsey Havens: I don’t think she attempted a pivot, and I definitely don’t think this proves “the dancefloor is dead” — but I do think the dancefloor got some guitars. Brat was a phenomenon, but what made it special was how it felt more about the album and the era than specific songs. (Plus, get a few Brat fans in a room and it’s likely they’ll still have wildly differing favorites from it.) Music, Fashion, Film continues in that vein for me: It’s cohesive as an album, and while its songs can stand on their own, they’re really best consumed as part of the whole; none of them feel as immediately chart-ready as some of Brat‘s singles.
