If you’re not evolving your merchandise mix, you’re regressing. Once that happens, you no longer become relevant.”

That philosophy has helped shape a steady stream of new tenants over the past year, including Gap Factory, the relocation of Hollister, and the arrival of internationally recognized brands aimed at appealing to Brampton’s growing population of young families.

The recently announced Walmart deal is among the biggest milestones.

“It’s a really significant achievement for the shopping centre,” Butler said. “Walmart is a great brand and certainly aligns well with our market. You’ve got a lot of young families and young people, and the value proposition Walmart offers fits perfectly with our demographic.”

The changes come on the heels of the mall’s multimillion-dollar renovation of its South Food Court, which reopened earlier this year with expanded seating, modern finishes and a refreshed lineup of restaurants designed to better reflect the tastes of the surrounding community.

But Butler believes attracting new retailers is only part of the equation.

He said today’s malls must offer experiences that online shopping simply cannot replicate.

“What we try to do in the shopping centre world is create an environment that is conducive to positive experiences,” he said. “People are social animals. They crave those social interactions.”

That strategy has led Bramalea City Centre to invest in more than shopping. During the FIFA World Cup, the mall partnered with TSN to create a public viewing lounge where fans gathered to watch matches. Seasonal attractions such as a virtual Christmas elevator ride to the North Pole and a Halloween-themed “Boo Elevator” have also drawn visitors looking for family-friendly experiences beyond retail.

Technology has also become a bigger part of the mall experience.

Interactive digital directories help shoppers navigate the property, while an online search tool called Shop List allows customers to locate specific products sold by retailers throughout the mall before they even begin shopping.

“We’re using technology to help people achieve their shopping objective more efficiently,” Butler said.

The continued investment, he said, reflects confidence in Brampton’s rapid growth and the wider Peel Region.

“We’ve had a group of investors who have been prepared to spend the money on this asset,” Butler said. “They have confidence in Brampton and the wider Peel market. Bramalea City Centre is intentionally positioning itself to take advantage of that growth.”

The evolution is far from over.

While Butler declined to reveal details, he confirmed active plans are underway for both the former Sears and Hudson’s Bay spaces, with announcements expected before the end of the year.

“I think we’ll have some information for the public that will make them happy,” he said.

For a shopping centre that first opened its doors in 1971, Butler believes continual reinvention is the key to remaining one of Canada’s busiest retail destinations.

“Our value proposition is creating an environment that is conducive to positive experiences,” he said. “That’s how you compete.”

As retail continues to change, Bramalea City Centre is betting that shoppers will keep coming—not just to buy something, but to spend time, meet friends, enjoy an event and experience something they can’t get with the click of a mouse.

INsauga’s Editorial Standards and Policies

Last 30 Days: 49,277 Votes

All Time: 1,463,358 Votes

    540 VOTES
Will you vote in the October municipal election?

WIN A $100 GIFT CARD

Subscribe to INsauga’s daily email newsletter for a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card.

As shopping habits continue to evolve and online retailers compete for consumers’ attention, Bramalea City Centre is betting…

[194339
51759,49,48
post-846944","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-brampton","tag-brampton","tag-ca","tag-canada
["GET
