Navneet Kaur \u2013 a Toronto woman allegedly slain by a Brampton man after rejecting his marriage proposals \u2013 is being remembered for her compassion \u201cand infectious smile.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kaur, 26, was shot and killed on the morning of July 24 while walking near her home on Humberwood Boulevard, near Rexdale Boulevard in northwest Toronto.<\/p>\n

Sharnjeet Singh, a 37-year-old Brampton man, has since been arrested by the OPP and charged with first-degree murder and failing to comply with a previous court-ordered undertaking.<\/p>\n

Kaur and her alleged killer knew each other but were never romantically involved, according to a source connected to the family. Singh was pursuing Kaur, and began harassing her when he rejected her advances, the source said.<\/p>\n

A fundraiser has been started to support Kaur\u2019s family back in India by her friend Uneet Mittal, who says Kaur \u201cwas a kind, caring, and compassionate soul who touched countless lives with her warmth, generosity, and infectious smile.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough we were not related by blood, we shared a bond of love, trust, and family,\u201d Mittal wrote on a GoFundMe page dedicated to Kaur. \u201cNavneet was a cherished part of my life, and her tragic and untimely passing has left me, along with everyone who knew her, devastated.\u201d<\/p>\n

He says Kaur was his \u201cchosen\u201d family, and that \u201cshe always went out of her way to help others and made everyone around her feel valued and loved.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHer loss has created an immeasurable void in the hearts of her family and friends,\u201d Mittal says.<\/p>\n

The fundraiser has collected more than $15,000 worth of donation of a $22,000 goal, with the money being used to arrange the transportation of Navneet\u2019s body from Canada to India, cover funeral costs and help the family with expenses.<\/p>\n

According to several media reports, Singh was charged in July 2025 with criminal harassment and assault involving Kaur. He was released on an undertaking that included a condition prohibiting any contact with her. He is awaiting trial on those charges, which have not been proven in court.<\/p>\n

Singh\u2019s bail was revoked following his arrest in the homicide investigation, and he remains in custody with a court appearance scheduled for July 31.<\/p>\n

The Toronto Police Service say Kaur and a man had a brief interaction shortly before the shooting at 7:23 a.m. on July 24.<\/p>\n

Reports say the woman was walking alone when she was approached by a man from behind. He called out to her; a brief conversation ensued; then a gun was pulled, and a single shot was fired.<\/p>\n
