\u00a0Three Abbotsford cyclists do challenge to help sick kids<\/p>\n

Three Abbotsford residents are participating in a cycling event in August to raise money for The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto.<\/p>\n
Bob and Heather Spencer and Carl Forde are each participating in the Great Cycle Challenge.<\/p>\n
Founded in 2016, the challenge has grown to become one of the biggest cycling events in the country.<\/p>\n
Participants are asked to set a cycling goal for August and log their kilometres throughout the month.<\/p>\n
In just over 10 years, riders from all provinces and territories have ridden 31.3 million kilometres, raising more than $61 million for research, care and the development of better treatments and cures for childhood cancer.<\/p>\n
Heather\u2019s goal is to ride 200 kilometres and raise $1,500. Bob\u2019s goal is to ride 600 kilometres and raise $2,000.<\/p>\n
The couple are no strangers to the annual challenge. This is Bob\u2019s ninth year participating, and Heather\u2019s eighth.<\/p>\n
Together, they have ridden more than almost 4,400 kilometres over the years, bringing in more than $39,000.<\/p>\n
Heather said they ride in honour of her sister, Barbie, whom she lost to cancer at age three.<\/p>\n
Forde has ridden more than 15,200 kilometres in the previous nine years he has participated and raised more than $14,000. His goal this year is to ride 1,300 km and raise $2,500.<\/p>\n
He said he continues to participate because \u201ckids should be living life, not fighting it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The SickKids Foundation was established in 1972 and is the largest charitable funder of child-health research, and one of the world\u2019s best pediatric health-care institutions.<\/p>\n
Donations can be made online to the Abbotsford participants by searching their names at greatcyclechallenge.ca.<\/p>\n
