{"id":847541,"date":"2026-08-05T23:50:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T23:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/847541\/"},"modified":"2026-08-05T23:50:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T23:50:24","slug":"only-one-conclusion-radical-study-suggests-life-on-earth-arose-twice-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/847541\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Only One Conclusion&#8217;: Radical Study Suggests Life on Earth Arose Twice : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The fact that you, or I, or any living creature, is here at all is a series of astonishing strokes of luck stretching back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/gobsmacking-study-finds-life-on-earth-emerged-4-2-billion-years-ago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than 4 billion years<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest hurdles was the very first one: How did life emerge from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/one-of-lifes-most-important-ingredients-could-have-formed-in-the-hearts-of-comets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">primordial soup<\/a> of stuff that very much wasn&#8217;t alive?<\/p>\n<p>A radical new study, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1126\/sciadv.aef3128\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Science Advances<\/a>, suggests that this unlikely threshold may actually have been crossed not once, but twice.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the main lineages of life \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bacteria\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bacteria<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archaea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">archaea<\/a> \u2013 may have independently figured out the secrets of metabolism that upgraded them from non-living to living, according to the new study, which focused on the most rudimentary set of chemical reactions thought to enable this transformation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The surprise is that the enzymes that catalyze those reactions are not conserved across the evolutionary divide that separates bacteria and archaea,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1138775?\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> William Martin, a biologist at Heinrich Heine University D\u00fcsseldorf in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The new data leave only one conclusion. The bacterial and archaeal lineages made the transition to the free-living state independently. Only free-living cells are alive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Let&#8217;s call it by name: we are looking at one origin of the genetic code, but two origins of life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a huge claim to make, especially when defining what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/radical-new-theory-gives-a-very-different-perspective-on-what-life-is\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">life even is<\/a> can be surprisingly tricky.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1785973821_8_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, life is considered matter that responds to its environment, takes in energy, grows, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/for-the-first-time-scientists-say-theyve-built-a-synthetic-cell-from-scratch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reproduces itself<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That sounds like it should cover the basics, but even that broad a statement is imperfect. After all,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/virus\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73053\" data-postid=\"212295\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">viruses<\/a> can do most of those, but aren&#8217;t traditionally considered &#8216;alive&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>One aspect of life that is universal \u2013 and which viruses lack \u2013 is metabolism, the collection of chemical reactions that organisms use to make molecules that are vital for their everyday functioning.<\/p>\n<p>Enzymes are the workhorse proteins that act as catalysts for these reactions in organisms, but that raises a weird chicken-and-egg question. <\/p>\n<p>Enzymes themselves are products of chemical reactions \u2013 so how did the first lifeforms begin metabolizing things, including making enzymes, without the help of other enzymes?<\/p>\n<p>The answer, it seems, lies in their surroundings. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s generally believed that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-recreated-the-ancient-chemical-reactions-that-may-have-sparked-life\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first life arose<\/a> in extremely reactive environments, such as hydrothermal vents. Metals that naturally occur in these places could have been the first catalysts for metabolism, converting compounds like hydrogen gas, ammonia, and carbon dioxide into other useful molecules.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Almost everything about the origin of metabolism is debated, including the roles of energy, genetics, autocatalysis, phosphate, cofactors, cyanide, CO2, and water,&#8221; Martin and colleagues <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1126\/sciadv.aef3128\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> in their paper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yet on one aspect all will agree: the ~400-reaction network that converts H2, CO2, NH3, H2S and phosphate into amino acids, bases and cofactors cannot have arisen in an instant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Its emergence from spontaneous environmental reactions had to traverse intermediate states of assembly, which have previously been elusive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers investigated the protein structures of core metabolic enzymes in the genomes of bacteria and archaea, and developed a method and algorithm to order them in complexity. (HHU\/Nadja Hoffmann)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found that the\u00a0last universal ancestor of all cells, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Last_universal_common_ancestor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LUCA<\/a>,\u00a0possessed enzymes for only about half of the reactions of metabolism,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1138775\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Martin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The other half was catalyzed by metals in the environment where LUCA arose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The team found that there were likely four different phases in the development of catalysis (enzyme-driven reactions).\u00a0The first relied solely on metals in the environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Once enough of the useful molecules built up, the not-quite-living-yet proto-cells (which included LUCA) could start developing their own enzymes that performed some of the functions of those metal catalysts.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, later proto-cells developed more and more enzymes, reducing their dependency on external metals, until they no longer needed them at all. Only at that point would they be considered &#8216;free-living cells&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, the researchers say, this didn&#8217;t occur until after bacteria and archaea had separated. These two branches figured out their own ways to tackle the same problems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-201722\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can see cases where the ancestors of bacteria and archaea independently evolved structurally distinct enzymes to catalyze the same essential metabolic reaction,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1138775\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Natalia Mrnjavac, a biologist at Heinrich Heine University D\u00fcsseldorf.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such parallel inventions could have paved the way to the independent emergence of free-living bacteria and archaea.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The study may also plug another gap in our understanding of the origins of life. <\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/every-life-form-on-earth-uses-the-same-chemical-for-energy-this-could-explain-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">molecule called ATP<\/a> is now a vital energy source to fuel metabolism \u2013 but it&#8217;s also made by enzymes, and wasn&#8217;t available in prebiotic chemistry. The researchers say they identified an alternative.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we react phosphite, a form of phosphorus that naturally occurs in hydrothermal vents, with organic compounds, we get metabolic phosphorylation reactions overnight in water,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1138775\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Manon Schlikker, a molecular evolutionary scientist at Heinrich Heine University D\u00fcsseldorf.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Phosphite and palladium replace ATP and enzymes; it&#8217;s amazing, and it makes early evolution a lot easier to grasp.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet critical to chemical reactions is the medium in which they occur, and scientists still don&#8217;t have a clear idea about that.
