Coronation Street star Gareth Pierce has teased what fans can expect from his character Todd Grimshaw ahead of his upcoming return to the soap, following a short break.<\/p>\n

After his best friend Sarah Platt was sent to prison for murdering his abusive boyfriend Theo Silverton, Todd fled Weatherfield and jetted off to Thailand to visit his mum Eileen Grimshaw. However, he’s set to come back from his adventure in the coming weeks on-screen.<\/p>\n

Sitting down with Inside Soap to discuss his Best Actor nomination for the Inside Soap Awards, Gareth revealed that fans are going to see a very different Todd when he returns from his travels.<\/p>\n

“What we tried to do with Todd going off to Thailand and coming back, was that it\u2019s a ground zero for him,” Gareth explains. “It\u2019s potentially made him a little too hedonistic, and we\u2019re re-engaging with his humorous side, but maybe it\u2019s a slightly crueller sarcasm and cynicism. <\/p>\n

“We know that Todd can be very cutting and sarcastic, and we\u2019ve seen him iron out those edges to be a more loyal, trusting person, but it hurt him badly in his relationship.<\/p>\n

“So, you\u2019ve got the armour going back on a little bit for Todd initially, and there will be something quite tragic about that for the audience because they\u2019ve come to really like him. You\u2019ll see him self-protecting in maybe a slightly mean way initially.”

Todd’s domestic abuse at the hands of his boyfriend Theo broke Corrie fans’ hearts \u2013 and Gareth reveals that Todd will bear the emotional scars of the relationship in the future.<\/p>\n

“Yes, I think it\u2019s important that we hold on to those, but then equally, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s helpful to mire him in this story and relationship,” he reasons.<\/p>\n

“We still want a character that is useful to the show, that can still reconnect with all those other things that we love him about him \u2013 his irreverence, wry humour and playfulness. So, the scars will be there, but what\u2019s important for me is that it\u2019s not in an obvious way.”<\/p>\n
