Brampton\u2019s contribution to Canada\u2019s FIFA World Cup team could soon be permanently recognized at the local fields where many young players begin their soccer journeys.<\/p>\n
A notice of motion coming before Brampton city council proposes renaming six soccer fields after Brampton-raised athletes who represented Canada at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, honouring the players while celebrating the city\u2019s reputation as one of the country\u2019s top soccer talent pipelines.<\/p>\n
The motion, put forward by Mayor Patrick Brown and seconded by Regional Councillors Keenan and Medeiros, notes that six athletes with ties to Brampton represented Canada at the tournament, the most World Cup representatives from any city in the country.<\/p>\n
The proposed field names would recognize:<\/p>\n
Cyle Larin Soccer Field at Chris Gibson Senior Soccer 1
\nTajon Buchanan Soccer Field at Bramalea Ltd. Community Park
\nJonathan Osorio Soccer Field at Morris Kerbel Park Soccer
\nLiam Millar Soccer Field at Flower City Community Campus Soccer
\nPromise David Soccer Field at Major Oaks Park Soccer
\nJayden Nelson Soccer Field at Avondale Field Soccer<\/p>\n
The motion says recognizing the players through community field names would \u201ccelebrate their achievements, foster civic pride, and further strengthen Brampton\u2019s legacy as a leader in the development of soccer talent.\u201d<\/p>\n
The six players \u2014 Larin, Buchanan, Osorio, Millar, David and Nelson \u2014 all developed their skills in Brampton before reaching the international stage.<\/p>\n
Their success has become a source of pride for the city\u2019s soccer community, which has long pointed to local clubs, coaches, facilities and community support as key reasons Brampton continues to produce elite players.<\/p>\n
When Canada\u2019s World Cup roster was announced, Brampton stood out as the city with the most representatives on the national team. The accomplishment drew attention from soccer leaders who say the city has become a model for player development.<\/p>\n
Sigma FC co-founder Bobby Smyrniotis, who has helped develop several professional players, including Cyle Larin, told The Canadian Press that Brampton and Peel Region\u2019s investment in soccer infrastructure has played an important role.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen Sigma started in 2005, there wasn\u2019t much from a facilities standpoint or turf field that allowed you to train longer, train into the winter months,\u201d Smyrniotis said. \u201cThat started to change in 2007, you started seeing more turf fields, you started seeing each of the municipalities\u2026start investing to allow players to play outdoors longer.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Brampton Soccer Club\u2019s executive director Paula Phillips also credited the city\u2019s soccer community, including coaches, parents and local facilities, for helping young players reach their goals.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s about pride, and I guess almost gratitude, because the current six players, and even the alumni, they never hesitate to say where they came,\u201d Phillips told The Canadian Press.<\/p>\n
Among the players being honoured is Cyle Larin, who became Canada\u2019s all-time leading men\u2019s goal scorer and earned international recognition during his career. Tajon Buchanan, Jonathan Osorio, Liam Millar, Promise David and Jayden Nelson have also gone on to professional careers and represented Canada at the highest level.<\/p>\n
For young soccer players in Brampton, the proposed names would serve as a reminder that the path from local fields to the world stage can begin close to home.<\/p>\n
