Having a good approach shoe can make or break your day of climbing. If you have ever made the mistake of using any old running shoe or hiking boot for a multipitch climb with a technical approach and descent, you are probably well aware of a few, if not all, of the things that can go wrong. Sneakers with minimal tread can make an easy slab feel like a scare show, and carrying bulky hiking boots can weigh you down when you\u2019re climbing the crux pitch. A technical, climby section of the approach or descent means risking it all in your inadequate shoes or stopping to switch to your rock shoes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The North Face has long offered the Verto Approach shoe, designed to meet all your approach and descent needs when you\u2019re cragging, bouldering or out on a multi-pitch. The latest redesign by The North Face offers all the same features and specs that have made the shoe so beloved, in a sleeker design that, to an unknowing observer, could easily pass as streetwear. Let\u2019s be honest, a lot of us end up wearing our approach shoes everywhere. It\u2019s not like we do it as a gorpcore fashion statement \u2013 it\u2019s just what happens when you\u2019re either coming or going for a quick climb before or after work, running errands, or hanging out with friends. An approach shoe that can pass as an everyday shoe is always welcome.<\/p>\n

The North Face offers two versions of the shoe: the Verto Approach and the Verto Approach GORE-TEX. The Verto Both shoes have an ergonomic forefoot that makes it comfortable for long hauls. This forefoot combined with the medial and lateral moulded-rubber rand, a climbing zone at the front of the shoe in the toe area, an internal midfoot stability shank, and a three-quarter-length rock plate mean that you will be prepared for technical, vertical terrain. And a custom full-length Vibram Megagrip outsole with 3.5 mm lugs means you will feel secure while climbing and smearing \u2013 midfoot and heel lugs will allow for confident braking.<\/p>\n

The Verto Approach upper is made of suede, making it long-lasting and durable, but it\u2019s not waterproof. The Verto Approach GORE-TEX has the additional benefit of keeping your feet dry when it\u2019s wet, puddly, muddy. It is composed of 400D Dyneema with an ultra-high-tenacity ripstop material that ensures durability.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Both shoes come in three colours each, allowing you to choose between darker or lighter stylish hues. If you need a shoe that will keep your feet dry, the Verto Approach GORE-TEX is the obvious choice. But if you want something more breathable (and a little cheaper), you can opt for the Verto Approach. Whatever version you decide on, both shoes are reliable workhorses built for long approaches, technical terrain, and everything that comes after \u2013 whether that means grabbing a post-climb drink with friends or wearing them around town without anyone knowing they\u2019re designed for more serious stuff.<\/p>\n
