Bertram Greenhough had promised his six-year-old daughter Audrey an ice-cream. It\u00a0was a warm June day in Brighton and the pair\u00a0were playing tourists in their own city, having just visited an upside-down house<\/a> near the i360 observation tower. The beach was packed, and they were heading in the direction of the Palace Pier so that Greenhough\u00a0could stay\u00a0true to his word. Along the way, they passed this lifeguard\u00a0shelter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI often walk around Brighton with my SLR film camera \u2013 very hipster of me. However, that day I only had my phone,\u201d Greenhough recalls. \u201cBut, as the adage goes, the best camera is the one you have with you. I saw this calm, minimalist scene suspended above thousands of people and I remember saying to my daughter, \u2018Oh, look at that, I need to take a picture!\u2019 She had no idea what I was talking\u00a0about!\u201d<\/p>\n

A second later, the lifeguard moved and the composition and\u00a0harmony had gone. It was, for Greenhough, \u201ca decisive moment\u201d.<\/p>\n

Later that evening \u2013 Mr Whippy with a flake secured and devoured \u2013 he used one of the presets in Lightroom to make some edits. \u201cI\u00a0tend to use them as a starting point,\u201d he says. \u201cI often find how I see a scene and what the camera actually records can be quite different, so I\u00a0increased the vibrancy of the yellows and reds, and adjusted the hue of the blue sky to complement the\u00a0other\u00a0two colours.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope it gives people a sense of peace and security,\u201d Greenhough adds. \u201cPerhaps, like me,\u00a0they can feel the warmth of the sun.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Bertram Greenhough had promised his six-year-old daughter Audrey an ice-cream.
