{"id":85155,"date":"2025-08-21T02:42:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T02:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/85155\/"},"modified":"2025-08-21T02:42:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T02:42:07","slug":"pierre-poilievre-accuses-mark-carney-of-weakness-in-dealing-with-donald-trump-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/85155\/","title":{"rendered":"Pierre Poilievre accuses Mark Carney of weakness in dealing with Donald Trump, China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/pierre-poilievre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/pierre-poilievre\/\">Pierre Poilievre<\/a> says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\">Mark Carney<\/a> has fallen short on defending Canadian interests on the global stage because the Prime Minister is not effectively dealing with the United States and China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Poilievre, the federal Conservative Leader, made the comments Wednesday during his first news conference since a by-election victory in Alberta this week that will allow him to return to the House of Commons as a member of Parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Commons is now on a summer break and set to resume on Sept. 15, although it remains to be seen if Mr. Poilievre will be sworn in as the new MP for Battle River-Crowfoot by then.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Poilievre remarked that U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/tariff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/tariff\/\">tariffs<\/a> have increased despite the Liberal government backing off on countertariffs and scrapping a planned digital-services tax that was criticized by U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWhere are Mr. Carney\u2019s elbows these days? He seems to have misplaced them,\u201d Mr. Poilievre said in Surrey, B.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cHe\u2019s made concession after concession to President Trump and he got nothing in return.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre secured a seat in the House of Commons late Monday, winning a by-election in Alberta&#8217;s Battle River-Crowfoot. The riding was left vacant shortly after April&#8217;s federal election, when Conservative Damien Kurek stepped down to allow Mr. Poilievre a chance to seek a seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-gmr-5\">The Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Poilievre also said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/china\/\">China<\/a>, sensing weakness, has imposed damaging tariffs on Canadian products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cMark Carney is losing abroad, and Canadians are paying the price at home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Conservative Leader\u2019s comments came in the same week that Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged him to be more of a team player in Canada\u2019s conflict with the U.S. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Speaking Monday as he left a meeting with Mr. Carney on Parliament Hill, Mr. Ford, a Progressive Conservative, suggested that Mr. Poilievre should \u201cwork with the Prime Minister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIt\u2019s Team Canada. Let\u2019s put our political stripes aside and start working together collectively on large infrastructure projects, and other areas that he can co-operate with the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Ontario Premier repeated a call for co-operation Wednesday during a news conference in Hamilton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThis is a time to work together. Let\u2019s forget these political stripes that drive me crazy from the day I got elected,\u201d Mr. Ford said. \u201cWe\u2019re on one team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-pierre-poilievre-conservative-leader-battle-river-crowfoot\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Opinion: Despite his negatives, Poilievre has a lock on the Conservative leadership<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In a victory speech Monday, Mr. Poilievre said Conservatives will continue to extend a hand to Mr. Carney, and work with any party to end tariffs \u201cand get a fair deal for Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">As prime minister, Mr. Poilievre said Wednesday, he would operate from a position of strength, passing a proposed Conservative sovereignty act to repeal some Liberal energy laws and expedite such projects as pipelines and mine development. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In response to a Canadian 100-per-cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/economy\/article-canola-industry-seed-tariff-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/economy\/article-canola-industry-seed-tariff-china\/\">China has imposed a 100-per-cent tariff<\/a> on Canadian canola oil and meal, effectively barring the import of those products. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">China is the largest export market for Canadian canola seed, the product of an industry that employs about 200,000 people and contributes more than $43-billion to Canada\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Carney has said discussions are under way on supports for farmers affected by the trade conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has raised doubts about whether a deal can be reached with Mr. Trump that removes all U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Talks have been under way between the two countries on the trade conflict that\u2019s seen tariffs imposed on both sides since March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Asked to respond to Mr. Poilievre\u2019s remarks, the Prime Minister\u2019s Office said in a statement that the 2018 free-trade agreement between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico means the U.S. average tariff rate on Canadian goods remains one of its lowest for all of its trading partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-pierre-poilievre-alberta-by-election-win-political-resilience\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pierre Poilievre touts Alberta by-election win as sign of political resilience<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cOther sectors of our economy \u2013 including lumber, steel, aluminum, and automobiles \u2013 are, however, heavily impacted by U.S. duties and tariffs,\u201d the statement said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWhile we will continue to negotiate with the United States on a long-term trading relationship, Canada\u2019s new government has taken significant action to protect Canadian jobs, invest in our industrial competitiveness, buy Canadian, and diversify our export markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On another issue, Mr. Poilievre said the federal government should list the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity, thus giving law enforcement stronger tools to dismantle the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The gang, named for an Indian gangster, has been linked to extortion cases targeting South Asian businesses in B.C.\u2019s Lower Mainland, Edmonton and Ontario\u2019s Peel Region. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">B.C.
