Kierra Williams transformed Jamaica’s fortunes at the 69th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship on Wednesday, producing a five-stroke improvement to vault from sixth place into a three-way tie for the lead after the second round at Royal Blue Golf Course.

Williams followed her opening-round 78 with an impressive one-over-par 73, giving her a two-round total of 151 and placing her alongside Puerto Rico’s Arabella Sol Lopez and Camila Alejandra Negroni Ramos on the top of the women’s leaderboard.

The turnaround was one of the clearest signs of Jamaica’s improved fortunes on a second day in which every Jamaican golfer except one posted a better score than in the opening round.

Madison Carroll of the host Bahamas, who had led after the first round, slipped to sixth.

Williams turns lessons into a five-stroke improvement

Williams attributed her dramatic improvement to a willingness to learn from the mistakes she made during her first encounter with the challenging Nassau layout.

“My first round, I played pretty well. I only made a couple mistakes due to not knowing the course very much as opposed to the second day,” she said.

“I learned from the mistakes that I made yesterday to be able to shoot five strokes better than my first round so the things that I messed up on yesterday (Tuesday), I made a point to do differently the second day, which led to my round being better.”

The Jamaican was equally enthusiastic about the Royal Blue course, despite the demanding heat and humidity.

“The course out here in Bahamas is really nice. It looks like they take very good care of it. The fairways are very pristine. There’s a lot of water. There’s nice trees. It’s aesthetically pleasing to play.”

Williams added that the layout requires golfers to commit fully to their decisions.

“It’s honestly a fun course. You have to be very decisive with what you want to do. It’s very nice. I enjoyed it.”

She also noted the tropical conditions that have repeatedly interrupted play.

“And the weather out here is very humid. It’s very hot. And because it’s so hot in the morning, they have the afternoon showers, which stops our play sometimes but it’s perfect. It’s beautiful. It’s very sunny. It’s perfect weather for a day of golf.”

Jamaica’s women stay within reach

Williams’ rise to the top was supported by solid performances from her teammates.

Kinston Burke and Mattea Issa posted second-round scores of 84 and 85, respectively. Both finished with two-round totals of 172 and are tied for 14th place heading into the final round.

With Williams now among the leaders, Jamaica enters the final day with a realistic opportunity to challenge for individual and team honors.

Men’s team makes significant gains

The Jamaican men also responded strongly after a difficult opening round.

Trey Williams produced the best second-round score for Jamaica, shooting three-over-par 75. Combined with his opening 81, the result gave him a 156 total and moved him from 41st to 33rd.

Oshae Haye remains Jamaica’s highest-ranked male player. After opening with a 78, Haye returned a 77 to finish the second round in 31st place with a two-day total of 155.

Zandre Roye, Jamaica’s reigning national champion and winner of the team’s trials, made one of the day’s biggest recoveries. After struggling to an 87 in the opening round, Roye responded with a 76 to reach 163 overall and climb from 52nd to 42nd.

Owen Samuda also moved upward after improving from an 85 to an 84. His combined score of 169 took him from 48th to 46th.

Dr. Mark Newnham followed an opening 87 with an 84, bringing his total to 171 and moving him from 52nd to 50th.

Camden endures rare step back

Purbo Camden was the only Jamaican unable to improve on his opening-round score.

After shooting 78 on Tuesday, Camden carded a seven-over-par 79 in the second round. His 157 aggregate left him in 37th place, compared with 30th after the opening round.

The result was a setback within an otherwise encouraging day for the Jamaican contingent.

Hernandez sets men’s pace

Kelvin Emir Hernandez Delgado emerged as the men’s individual leader after two rounds.

The leader combined a 71 in the opening round with a superb 68 in the second to reach five-under-par 139 overall.

Jamaica will therefore enter the final round with both individual and team positions still capable of changing significantly.

Final round to decide everything

The third and final round will determine the individual champions as well as the overall men’s and women’s team standings.

For Jamaica, Williams’ dramatic move into the women’s lead has provided the biggest storyline heading into the championship’s decisive stage. The men’s team, meanwhile, has used the second round to recover ground across much of the leaderboard.

After a difficult opening day, the Jamaicans now have one final opportunity to convert that improvement into championship success on the demanding Royal Blue layout.
