NICE, France, Aug 9 (Reuters) \u2013 Dutchwoman Demi Vollering secured her second Tour de France Femmes title on Sunday, winning the ninth and final stage in emphatic fashion to reclaim cycling\u2019s biggest prize.<\/p>\n
The \u200b29-year-old FDJ-Suez rider, widely regarded as one of the finest \u200ccyclists of her generation, added another milestone to an illustrious career that includes the 2023 Tour triumph, the 2026 Giro d\u2019Italia Women and back-to-back La Vuelta Femenina titles in 2024 and 2025.<\/p>\n
Vollering began Sunday\u2019s 99.2-km finale around Nice with an eight-second lead \u200cover Katarzyna \u200bNiewiadoma-Phinney after wresting the yellow jersey from \u2060the Pole a day earlier.<\/p>\n
Vollering \u2060put any lingering doubts to rest on the fourth and final ascent of the Col d\u2019Eze, where she launched a decisive attack on the 31-year-old Niewiadoma-Phinney before soloing to victory in Nice.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought, I\u2019ve never \u200bwon in the yellow jersey before,\u201d Vollering said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought about my team, I thought about Celia (Gery) \u2013 who had a really rough night. I \u2060thought about all the work I did \u2060before this, all the people standing behind me, working \u200btogether.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe people I have around me, not only the dream to win in \u200byellow here, my second Tour de France, but it\u2019s the \u200cdream to live this life, work hard together with people with a lot of passion. That\u2019s the whole dream.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was like \u2018I have to try to attack and go alone\u2019\u2026 I wanted to make it clear that we \u2060as a team deserve to win a beautiful Tour de France Femmes with humility and with pride.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vollering finished one minute and 18 seconds ahead of Niewiadoma-Phinney \u2060in the final general \u200cclassification, while Italy\u2019s Elisa Longo Borghini completed the podium.<\/p>\n
Spain\u2019s \u2060Paula Blasi was second on the stage, one minute \u200band \u200cfour seconds behind Vollering, with Niewiadoma-Phinney coming third.<\/p>\n
Vollering claimed \u200bher third \u2060stage victory of this year\u2019s race and her sixth Tour de France Femmes stage win overall.<\/p>\n
In the men\u2019s race, Slovenia\u2019s Tadej Pogacar claimed a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title in July, securing a third successive triumph in cycling\u2019s most prestigious event.<\/p>\n
