WNBA discourse has been recently dominated by the ongoing debate about whether transgender athletes should be allowed in women\u2019s sports, and it\u2019s interesting to see how it got to this point.<\/p>\n

The WNBA has gotten caught up in a larger cultural issue over the past couple of weeks. The topic in question? Whether transgender athletes should be allowed to compete in women\u2019s sports. <\/p>\n

This culture war controversy has been going on for a long time within the world of sports. But considering that the W has been known for its inclusivity, it hadn\u2019t come up in the league\u2019s context yet. <\/p>\n

However, all that changed with Sophie Cunningham\u2019s July comments, which opened up a Pandora\u2019s box and led to a chain reaction. Here\u2019s a look at the timeline of the entire debate. <\/p>\n

Cunningham\u2019s rise to WNBA stardom came suddenly after her hard foul while defending superstar Caitlin Clark, and she has only grown more popular since.<\/p>\n

In 2022, Cunningham had reposted a comment protesting transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. The backlash on social media was swift, and she released a statement expressing support for all athletes.<\/p>\n

Her comments which sparked this recent argument came in an ESPN interview<\/a> published on July 21.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans,\u201d Cunningham said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m like, \u2018I never once said that,’\u201d she says. \u201cI think that I am here to extend love. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn\u2019t have to go against biological men.\u201d<\/p>\n

This led to many fans praising for speaking \u2018the truth\u2019 despite it being controversial. Others felt the comments were a bit intolerant and against exclusivity, which led to others in the league speaking out. <\/p>\n

The league has long been known as a queer-friendly, inclusive space in the world of sports. It was natural that the Fever player\u2019s comments would lead to a response. <\/p>\n

Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve wore a t-shirt in support of transgender people, it read, \u2018Trans kids belong\u2019. And speaking ahead of the Lynx-Fever clash earlier in August, she explained her point. <\/p>\n

\u201cI come from a space of inclusion,\u201d Reeve told reporters, as per an ESPN report<\/a>. \u201cThe narrative that I think is problematic is to suggest that transgender athletes are the biggest problem in women\u2019s sports. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what\u2019s bothersome. There is a faction of people in our country that are making this a massive issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me sports is about belonging,\u201d Nakase said. \u201cIt\u2019s about inclusivity. It\u2019s about allowing everyone to be their authentic self. I\u2019m all about women, little girls deserving to play, and that includes trans women.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two coaches\u2019 comments also received pushback, Stephen A. Smith was among those to call out Reeve. While the controversy was only raging within the league at this point, it was about to get some new entrants. <\/p>\n

This issue has caused ripples all over the sports world, and some former NBA stars saw the opportunity to involve themselves. Enes Kanter Freedom was the first to do so, wildly declaring for the 2027 WNBA Draft. <\/p>\n

After careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines,
I\u2019m officially declaring myself a @WNBA<\/a> prospect.<\/p>\n

If simply declaring who you are is all that\u2019s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines, I\u2019m officially declaring myself a WNBA prospect,\u201d Freedom wrote in a post on X. <\/p>\n

If simply declaring who you are is all that\u2019s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA\u2026 Based on the current guidelines, I can and am officially declaring my eligibility for the upcoming WNBA draft.\u201d<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t the only person with this idea either, Royce White followed suit just hours later, claiming the same thing. <\/p>\n

A second former NBA player plans to join the WNBA. <\/p>\n

Royce White \u2013 a first-round NBA Draft pick in 2012 \u2013 told me he will be declaring for the 2027 WNBA Draft. \u201cI\u2019m transgender. I\u2019m a woman. I identify as sometimes identifying as a woman for purpose of basketball, professional basketball, so I\u2019ll be declaring for the WNBA draft in 2027 as well,\u201d White said.<\/p>\n

The involvement of Freedom and White took the issue to a whole new level. Both have since only doubled down on their messaging, fanning the flames of an already heated social media debate. <\/p>\n

Where does it go from here?<\/p>\n

The million-dollar question for the WNBA is where things go from here. The WNBPA has already released a statement announcing their stance against discrimination and athletes being excluded. <\/p>\n

The WNBPA issued a statement in response to former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom’s plans to enter the WNBA draft in 2027:<\/p>\n

\u201cHate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people, only fuel fear, division, and harm,\u201d the statement reads. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to have hard conversations. But we will not be used as political pawns.\u201d<\/p>\n

The players seem committed to keeping the WNBA inclusive, but the situation might force the league to define their policies in one way or another. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s a shame that a political issue seems to be overshadowing the game on the court at the moment. Hopefully, the situation will be dealt with soon and fans can get excited for some playoff hoops instead.<\/p>\n
