Four road safety proposals could lead to school buses equipped with cameras, more speed cushions and no parking signs in Brampton.<\/p>\n
Brampton City Council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday for the first time since July 8, and the upcoming agenda includes four motions that look to bring more traffic safety measures to city streets.<\/p>\n
School buses<\/p>\n
The first is from Mayor Patrick Brown and calls for Brampton school buses to be equipped with \u201cautomated school bus stop-arm camera systems\u201d \u2013 a technology designed to catch drivers who illegally pass a school bus while its stop-arm is extended.<\/p>\n
Failing to stop for a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended carries a fine of $400 to $2,000 and 6 demerit points for a first offense in Ontario.<\/p>\n
In the motion, Brown calls for city staff to work with stakeholders like school boards, school bus operators and enforcement partners to explore bringing the automated cameras to Brampton buses.<\/p>\n
Brown says the city has \u201csignificant expertise in automated enforcement\u201d through Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program and its municipal processing centre, which were scaled back due to a ban by the province last year.<\/p>\n
The city has been exploring new uses for its $78-million speed camera ticketing centre, including red light camera processing<\/a>.<\/p>\n Speed cushions<\/p>\n A pair of motions from Wards 3 and 4 City Coun. Dennis Keenan could bring speed cushions to some areas in Brampton.<\/p>\n One motion is calling for speed cushions to be installed on Cornwall Street, Keystone Street, Rollingwood Drive, Eldomar Street, Sterne Street and Timberlane Drive between Gurdwara Gate and Ravenswood Street.<\/p>\n Keenan says in the motion that the streets were selected after \u201ccommunity engagement\u201d and hearing from residents about \u201ca history of traffic safety concerns regarding speeding vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n The other motion says residents living near Brampton\u2019s RC Charlton Park have complained about excessive speeding and unsafe driving in the area. Keenan is calling for the installation of speed bumps on Pefferlaw Circle adjacent from the park to \u201cpromote safer neighbourhood streets and the protection of vulnerable users.\u201d<\/p>\n No parking signs<\/p>\n The last motion on Wednesday\u2019s agenda dealing with traffic safety comes from Wards 3 and 4 Regional Coun. Martin Medeiros and, if approved, would lead city staff to install no parking signage in front of 29 Hawkway Crt. and on one side of Leadership Drive.<\/p>\n The motion says vehicles are obstructing the clear view and movement of oncoming traffic in the area, \u201ccreating significant challenges for cyclists, residents, and emergency vehicles to navigate and proceed throughout the neighbourhood.\u201d<\/p>\n The proposed changes will go to council for consideration on Wednesday, and follow the removal of bike lanes in some parts of the city.<\/a><\/p>\n Keenan and Medeiros spearheaded a motion in May to convert bike lanes on Charolais Boulevard between James Potter Road and Hodgson Street back to four vehicle traffic lanes.<\/p>\n
