{"id":855875,"date":"2026-08-12T23:00:22","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T23:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/855875\/"},"modified":"2026-08-12T23:00:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T23:00:22","slug":"there-is-harm-in-entertainment-says-winnipeg-humane-society-after-racehorse-euthanized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/855875\/","title":{"rendered":"There is \u2018harm in entertainment,\u2019 says Winnipeg Humane Society after racehorse euthanized"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Winnipeg Humane Society wants Manitobans to know that animals used in sport or entertainment comes at a price.<\/p>\n<p>Early last week, a horse was euthanized after suffering a leg injury during a race at Assiniboia Downs.<\/p>\n<p>In a social media post, the WHS says it \u201cserves as a heartbreaking reminder of the animal exploitation that occurs at the hands of humans for entertainment purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe humane society has long since advocated for welfare of all animals, including and especially those animals that are used in entertainment purposes,\u201d WHS CEO Christina von Schindler told CityNews.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was made by the onsite veterinarian to euthanize the horse \u2013 a three-year-old colt named Forty Twenty \u2013 after it sustained an injury to its front leg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur call for people is really an individual choice, call for consideration,\u201d von Schindler said. \u201cI tend to think that we all have a vote into the kind of society or world we want to live in, and we place that vote every time we spend our money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you spend your hard-earned dollars, consider what you\u2019re purchasing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WHS first took to social media, making its stance clear that this is not an isolated incident in the sport, and that animal exploitation has become all too familiar. The post\u2019s caption reads: \u201cThe harm in entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you see a young animal like that that really reasonably should have many years of life, euthanized, for an injury directly related to their role in an entertainment sport, can\u2019t help but think that animal really should have those many years of life left,\u201d von Schindler said.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement from Assiniboia Downs Gaming and Event Centre, CEO Darren Dunn said: \u201cWe are aware and disagree with their position.
