Whether striving for independence while resisting parental dependence when entering adulthood or desiring career advancement/success while refusing to succumb to the daily grind, there’s a battle raging under the skin in all of us. Not many though are commanding a spaceship hurtling through space while wrestling with accountability for the earthly destruction that we have left behind. Oddly specific? Well that’s the turmoil the protagonist faces in Costa Rica’s djent-meet-symphonic progressive metal act Fractal Sun’s most recent LP, Divergent Paradox. And you thought ordering a salad on your weight loss journey was tough!

Shimmering keys, flutes, harps, and backing synths provide an ethereal atmosphere that engulfs the baritone djentiness of Divergent Paradox. Vocalist, Hellen Quirós belts out her lines to the high heavens, with the album’s clear standout performance. While the protagonist of the album’s tale may be unsure of her place in the universe, Quirós’ confident delivery is undeniable. She effectively adjusts her tone to match the backing instrumentation which shifts between djent metal and softer passages. In the more gentle sections, her voice subdues into a lullaby-esque quality without feeling cheesy. During distorted passages and choruses, Quirós’ operatic vocals soar, with a majestic arena-filling power.

Limited harsh vocals appear scattered throughout Divergent Paradox, providing enough variation in the lyrical delivery to stave off the monotony of an album that’s at times overly focused on Quirós’ performance. Additional layers of harmonized voices populate Divergent Paradox, providing a powerful backing to Quirós’ delivery. Although when the secondary vocals break off from harmonizing and become distinct, enhancing vocals, they drift into being overwrought and saccharine, noticeable at the conclusion of “Trail of Pain” and during “Weaving the Universe”, which distract from Fractal Sun’s ultimate impact.

Underneath the prominent vocals, downtuned djent riffs are interspersed with passages of serene drifting melodies which characterize Fractal Sun’s instrumentation. Tempered guitar arpeggios and keys act as the vapor trail to Quirós’ driving choruses (“Blooming Regrets”). Often though, throughout Divergent Paradox the vocals strangle the guitar tone as notes become muddled and blended together. This effect is particularly prominent in the opening tracks, “Trail of Hope” and “Trail of Pain”, as the details of distorted riffs become indistinguishable. When the vocals subside, however, guitarists Johnny and Isabel Vizquez lay down some delicious, noodly licks and soaring guitar solos (“Withering Grace”), Animal As Leaders-like technical djenting (Blooming Regrets”), and even some horn-filled Between the Buried and Me danceable tomfoolery (“Bow Before Me”). Santiago Mejía makes his presence felt on the bass throughout Divergent Paradox with prominent bass solos (“Blooming Regrets”), and laying down the thick low end to the djent stomping.

On the whole, Fractal Sun rely a smidge too heavily on storytelling and Quirós’ vocal performance, dampening the impact of the instrumentation and overall experience. Yes, Quirós has a great voice, though often during Divergent Paradox’s forty-minutes, the album feels like a solo work, as she overpowers the rest of the band. As it stands, Fractal Sun’s paradox is their divergent focus on vocals and instrumentation. Regardless, Divergent Paradox has plenty of high points and strong performances across the board worthy of checking out.

Recommended tracks: Blooming Regrets, Withering Grace, Bow Before Me
You may also like: Assemble the Chariots, Native Construct, Corelia
Final verdict: 7/10

Related links: Bandcamp | Facebook | Instagram

Label: Independent Release

Fractal Sun is:
– Hellen Quirós (vocals)
– Johnny Vizquez (guitar)
– Isabel Vizquez (guitar)
– Santiago Mejía (bass)
– Sunfyre (drums)

Related

Published by Clay on 2026/08/152026/08/15 Album art by: Isabel Víquez Style: Progressive metal, djent, symphonic metal (Mixed vocals,…

[28
43409,16604,49,48,14066,163074,113206,75,9233,10719,88181,341,45174,136362
post-859492","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-43409","tag-16604","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-costa-rica","tag-djent","tag-english-lyrics","tag-entertainment","tag-independent","tag-july","tag-mixed-vocals","tag-music","tag-progressive-metal","tag-symphonic-metal
["GET
