Why today’s game matters

Holy Cross heads to Syracuse on Sunday looking to build off an impressive comeback in its season opener. The Crusaders erased a 2-0 halftime deficit against Quinnipiac and earned a 2-2 draw behind second-half goals from Sam Halligan and Caroline Bierfeldt. Holy Cross finished with an 11-9 edge in shots and generated most of its offense after the break.

Syracuse also enters the matchup 0-0-1 after battling Villanova to a scoreless draw in its opener Thursday night. Goalkeeper Maya Naimoli starred in her Orange debut, making four saves, including several late stops to preserve the shutout. Syracuse created opportunities through Julia Arbelaez, who recorded four of the team’s five shots.

Holy Cross will look to carry momentum from its second-half rally, while Syracuse hopes its defense and home-field advantage can spark a strong start to the season.
