\n\tBefore Sydney Sweeney<\/a> made national headlines for her American Eagles jeans<\/a>, there was another advertising campaign fronted by the \u201cEuphoria\u201d Emmy nominee that garnered controversy on social media. That campaign was for the bath products company Dr. Squatch, which started selling a limited-edition soap to men that was infused with Sweeney\u2019s \u201cbathwater.\u201d The product, officially called Sydney\u2019s Bathwater Bliss, sold out in seconds.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s important to have a finger on the pulse of what people are saying, because everything is a conversation with the audience,\u201d\u00a0Sweeney recently told The Wall Street Journal<\/a> about how she tracks public perception of her output.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen it came to backlash against Sydney\u2019s Bathwater Bliss, the actor and producer noticed that \u201cit was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting. They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi<\/a>\u2019s bathwater.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSweeney is referring to the candle that was branded Jacob Elordi\u2019s Bathwater<\/a>, released in January 2024 amid the social media attention around \u201cSaltburn,\u201d which starred her \u201cEuphoria\u201d co-star. In the film, directed by Emerald Fennell, Barry Keoghan\u2019s character becomes obsessed with Elordi\u2019s and slurps up the bathwater he was soaking in while masturbating. The Elordi bathwater candle became a viral sensation that spawned many lusty memes. But as Sweeney noted, she believes her bathwater product was met with comparative divisiveness.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe backlash that greeted Sydney\u2019s Bathwater Bliss is nothing compared to the conversation that ignited online this summer over Sweeney\u2019s American Eagle jeans campaign. The ads were built <\/a>around the slogan \u201cSydney Sweeney has great jeans.\u201d The slogan was a riff on \u201cgreat genes,\u201d which caused some voices to denounce the campaign for glorifying her white heritage and thin physique. Some users on social media\u00a0even compared<\/a>\u00a0the ads to \u201cNazi propaganda.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u2018Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans\u2019 is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story,\u201d American Eagle said in a statement <\/a>defending the campaign. \u201cWe\u2019ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n
