{"id":861022,"date":"2026-08-17T06:38:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T06:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/861022\/"},"modified":"2026-08-17T06:38:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T06:38:13","slug":"after-half-a-century-physicists-find-the-strongest-evidence-yet-for-an-exotic-glueball-particle-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/861022\/","title":{"rendered":"After Half A Century, Physicists Find The Strongest Evidence Yet For An Exotic &#8216;Glueball&#8217; Particle : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An important part of the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-standard-model\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73024\" data-postid=\"214131\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Standard Model<\/a> of particle physics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cern-discovers-new-particle-after-upgrading-large-hadron-collider\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quantum chromodynamics<\/a> describes the strong interaction of quarks and gluons to create the ordinary matter we see, touch, and taste.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quark\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Quarks<\/a> are fundamental subatomic particles that combine in trios to make up familiar baryons such as protons and neutrons, and gluons are the quantum &#8216;Gorilla Glue&#8217; that binds their quark structure together.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly 50 years, physicists have hunted for &#8220;glueballs&#8221;, exotic particles predicted by this theory of the strong interaction.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a collaboration working at a collider in Beijing says it has the clearest evidence yet that a known particle called X(2370) is dominated by one of these elusive states.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The glueball is an important prediction of quantum chromodynamics, the theory that describes the strong interaction, and is also the only type of particle in nature composed entirely of force mediators,&#8221; the international team of researchers behind the discovery\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/english.cas.cn\/newsroom\/research-news\/202608\/t20260804_1186883.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1786948689_168_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Physicists sifted through the wreckage of high-energy particle collisions to find strong evidence of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/physicists-detect-hints-of-a-mysterious-particle-called-a-glueball\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">glueball<\/a>, made predominantly of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gluon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gluons<\/a> \u2013 massless force carriers of the strong interaction between quarks. <\/p>\n<p>The same underlying physics also gives rise to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_force\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">residual strong force<\/a> that binds protons and neutrons into an atomic nucleus, much as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-sea-of-quantum-weirdness-experimental-physicists-have-created-a-surprisingly-exotic-new-form-of-matter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">photons carry the electromagnetic force<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new evidence for this exotic, unstable glueball&#8217;s ephemeral existence comes from a recent preprint on <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2607.20366\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arXiv<\/a>, presented at the International Conference on High Energy Physics in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1350\" height=\"1388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/030521-np-glueballs.jpg\" alt=\"After Half A Century, Physicists May Have Finally Confirmed The Existence Of An Exotic \" glueball=\"\" particle=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214147\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Gluons bind the quarks that comprise mesons and baryons. Gluons can also form exotic glueball particles, made mainly of force carriers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/science\/np\/articles\/searching-signs-glueballs-proton-proton-smashups\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> (University of Glasgow)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The team&#8217;s analysis suggests that a glueball is the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2607.20366\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dominant constituent<\/a>&#8221; of X(2370), a particle discovered in 2011 by the <a href=\"http:\/\/bes3.ihep.ac.cn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Beijing Spectrometer III (BES III) Collaboration<\/a> at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>This collaboration uses the Beijing Electron Positron Collider II (BEPCII), a particle accelerator and collider that smashes electrons into their  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/antimatter\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73014\" data-postid=\"214131\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">antimatter<\/a> counterparts, called positrons, to probe perplexing particle physics.<\/p>\n<p>The resultant glueball is an &#8220;unprecedented form of matter,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3363404\/what-glueball-chinese-led-team-finds-rare-particle-made-entirely-force\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Jin Shan, a particle physicist at Nanjing University and one of the research team&#8217;s leaders.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It not only enables the theory describing strong interactions to pass its most rigorous test, but also vastly expands the boundaries of our understanding of the physical world,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3363404\/what-glueball-chinese-led-team-finds-rare-particle-made-entirely-force\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> Fan Chen at South China Morning Post.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1125\" height=\"754\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/W020260813332376954510.jpg\" alt=\"After Half A Century, Physicists May Have Finally Confirmed The Existence Of An Exotic \" glueball=\"\" particle=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214148\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The BES III detector of the BEPCII. The collaboration includes approximately 700 researchers from 15 countries. <a href=\"http:\/\/bes3.ihep.ac.cn\/hi\/202608\/t20260813_1187889.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(BESIII\/IHEP)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When particles crash together at nearly the speed of light, the succeeding explosion of subatomic confetti yields a veritable Baskin-Robbins lineup of short-lived products.<\/p>\n<p>One of these is the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J\/psi_meson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">J\/\u03c8 (J\/psi) meson<\/a>, a subatomic particle that pops out of high-energy collisions and decays almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>These decays &#8220;provide one of the best avenues to search for glueballs, and searching for glueballs has been one of the collider&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-say-they-ve-found-a-particle-made-up-entirely-of-nuclear-force\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">primary physics goals for decades<\/a>,&#8221; the researchers <a href=\"http:\/\/bes3.ihep.ac.cn\/hi\/202608\/t20260813_1187889.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">say<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?int_promo=stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-201722\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Previously, in a study published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prl\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevLett.132.181901\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Physical Review Letters<\/a> in 2024, the researchers analyzed 10 billion meson decay events. <\/p>\n<p>They measured the X(2370) particle&#8217;s mass and spin parity \u2013 a property that dictates its interactions and almost-instantaneous decay \u2013 for the first time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/physicists-detect-hints-of-a-mysterious-particle-called-a-glueball\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">finding complete agreement<\/a> between their experimental values and predictions.<\/p>\n<p>Now, they&#8217;ve identified its additional decay modes and determined its flavor-singlet nature, &#8220;the most important characteristic of a glueball.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In simplified terms, this means it shows no preference for the six types, or flavors, of quarks \u2013 picture a sommelier failing to distinguish the specific fruit profile of tutti frutti ice cream, for an even more colloquial context.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1098\" height=\"909\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/StandardModelParticlePhysicsLogo2.jpg\" alt=\"After Half A Century, Physicists May Have Finally Confirmed The Existence Of An Exotic \" glueball=\"\" particle=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214146\"  \/>The Standard Model is a set of mathematical formulae and measurements describing elementary particles and their interactions.
