Another week, another victory for Spider-Man. Another week where The Odyssey held back a pack of new competitors, which makes for an interesting line about this month. Brand New Day technically opened on July 31, so not counting the pandemic year of 2020, this could be the first August since 2000 not to open a $100 million grosser. Yes, again, Brand New Day had two August days in its opening weekend. But hopes for dinosaurs hitting that milestone were likely dashed this weekend. There\u2019s certainly nothing next week expected to do boffo bucks. Unless fans come out to support Coyote vs. Acme at the end of the month, that statistic may come to fruition. But Brand New Day and Odyssey are certainly still filling theaters this month.<\/p>\n
King of the Crop: Spider-Man: Brand New Day Crosses $2 Billion Worldwide<\/p>\n
The historic run of Spider-Man: Brand New Day<\/a> continues, and the numbers simply speak for themselves. Tack on another $70 million this weekend for the second-best third weekend of all time, ahead of both Avatar: The Way of Water ($67.4 million) and Avatar ($68.4 million) but behind the champion, Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($90.2 million). Brand New Day\u2019s $785.8 million through 17 days is the current leader over Awakens\u2019 $742.2 million and Avengers: Endgame\u2019s $723.7 million. That\u2019s $43 million ahead of the Star Wars pace, though we could see that gap begin to tighten up as schools begin to go back and weekdays trail off. It could end up being more of a squeaker than some might think with this already a massive haul. The Force Awakens took 23 days to cross $800 million and another 27 to reach $900 million. Brand New Day is going to get to $800 million possibly in 19. Globally the film has also just reached $2 billion; just the eighth film ever to achieve that. No Way Home finished its run with $1.912 billion.<\/p>\n Rotten Returns: Neon Made a Bad Bet on The Wrong Girls <\/p>\n Neon\u2019s release of The Wrong Girls<\/a> was dead on arrival. In 520 theaters it made just $406,000. That is two out of their last three releases, along with Nicolas Winding Refn\u2019s Her Private Hell, to have less than a $800 per-theater average and their third this year along with Julia Ducournau\u2019s Alpha. They only had two releases (Saint Omer and The Actor) to debut to less than $1,000 per theater from 2022-2025. The film is at 55% on the Tomatometer. In their history, Neon has only released three films to receive less than 50%: The Bad Batch (45%) in 2017 and then Her Private Hell (40%) and Sheep in the Box (42%) in 2026.<\/p>\n Tales of the Top 10: The Odyssey Holds Off A New Pack of Challengers; The End of Oak Street Debuts in Third<\/p>\n Christopher Nolan\u2019s The Odyssey<\/a> was still strong enough for second place this week with $23.2 million. That\u2019s the eighth-best fifth weekend ever, and that makes three films this year to be in the top 15 of that list, alongside Michael ($20.6 million) and Project Hail Mary ($20.5 million). Brand New Day will likely join this list as well. The Odyssey was just ahead of The Sixth Sense\u2019s $22.8 million, but that\u2019s just the weekend. It was enough to get The Odyssey over $500 million domestic in a month\u2019s time, only the 16th film to ever do it in that period. A domestic finish in the $570-580 million seems feasible right now. Worldwide the film has moved into 27th all-time with $1.29 billion, and it could end up not only in the top 15 but certainly surpass Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.338 billion) as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.<\/p>\n David Robert Mitchell\u2019s The Myth of the American Sleepover was a well-received debut (80% on the Tomatometer) put out by IFC Films in a limited release, grossing all of $41,045. His follow-up, It Follows, got a wider release after a couple platform weekends and may have only made just $14.6 million but has remained one of the most talked-about horror films of the past 12 years, spawning a sequel that is supposed to be filming soon. Mitchell\u2019s Under the Silver Lake became one of those divisive Cannes screenings with some declaring it impenetrable and others hailing it as a masterpiece. A24 kind of quietly dumped it the following April in 2019 and it barely made more than his debut ($46,083) \u2014 at least domestically, as it did make another $2 million internationally.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n His next film, originally titled Flowervale Street, had been the subject of much speculation, as is usually the case when the film has been delayed as long as it has. Principal photography wrapped back in June 2024, and it had been lingering on the schedule (at first for May 2025, swapped by Warner Bros. for Final Destination: Bloodlines) with little known about it until the title was changed to The End of Oak Street<\/a> this year after a second delay from its March 2026 date. This weekend it arrived with a somewhat disappointing $21 million start after rising expectations had it a little bit higher. It may not be Jurassic Park money, but critics certainly like it more than any of the sequels of the 1993 blockbuster.<\/p>\n Anyway you chomp it, this is one heckuva summer for Anne Hathaway. The Odyssey is going to be one of the biggest films ever. The Devil Wears Prada 2 should not be forgotten, adding nearly $700 million to the global box office. Plus the trailer for Verity, part of the Colleen Hoover universe, just dropped this week in anticipation of its October release. (And people should check out David Lowery\u2019s Mother Mary on VOD now as well.) We\u2019ll see if Oak Street\u2019s $85 million production can go the distance for Warner Bros. (it has made $47 million globally so far), but theaters are certainly getting their cut, and Hathaway has built up a solid resume of major successes over the years that should not be overlooked. Oak Street could be a film that connects with more people over time as well.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Paw Patrol: The Movie was released in the second summer of the pandemic \u2014 the vaccine summer. But it still streamed on Paramount+, simultaneously opening to $10.2 million in theaters and finishing with over $40 million. Two years later, a late September release of Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie began with a much mightier $22.7 million and finished with over $65 million and $141.6 million globally. Paramount may be resigned to the usual underachieving month of August where only one animated film (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem) grossed over $100 million. The first Paw Patrol film is actually the ninth-highest grossing animated film ever released this month. Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie<\/a> is going to knock it back a place when it is done, as it has started with a decent $20.5 million, the sixth-best animated opening this August (the R-rated Sausage Party is the best opener with $34.2 million). Kids back in school will tighten those weekday numbers, but while most of these films don\u2019t exactly hit the jackpot, they have produced healthy multiples over their openings, so we could still see this become the highest-grossing Paw Patrol of them all.<\/p>\n Angel Studios just had a decent showing for a film about the guy who would become our first President in Young Washington. Now they will try one with the 40th, only its not Dennis Quaid but Jeff Daniels stepping into the shoes of Ronald Reagan working on a nuclear deal with Gorbachev in The Brink of War<\/a>. Young Washington had a solid $19.3 million start as the country celebrated its 250th anniversary, and it finished with nearly $47 million. Reagan doesn\u2019t get quite the birthday or anniversary, and the film opened with just $2.6 million this weekend. Quaid\u2019s Reagan biopic grossed just over $30 million.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n A pair of music-based films did better than last week\u2019s new releases. Katseye: Wild Hearts<\/a>, released by Trafalgar into 724 theaters, is a documentary about the six-member girl group, and it grossed $3.6 million. Meanwhile, in the wake of the success of the filmed Hadestown: The Musical, Focus released Six: The Musical Live<\/a> even wider into 1,462 theaters and it made $3 million.<\/p>\n Last week\u2019s top openers are already an afterthought with audiences. One Night Only<\/a>, the subject of much criticism over its capitulation-can-be-fun premise and nudity snipping in a sex comedy, fell to $2 million in its second weekend, bringing its 10-day total to just $9.8 million. Even The Happytime Murders got to $20 million eight years ago in August. Then Broken Lizard\u2019s Super Troopers 3<\/a> fell out of the top 10 with $1.4 million. It now stands at $6.6 million. Their third feature, Beerfest, grossed $19.1 million opening in late August of 2006.<\/p>\n Toy Story 5<\/a> fell out of the top five after eight weeks, and with $2.3 million, its domestic total pushed to over $475.4 million with a global total over $1.114 billion, which ranks 39th on the all-time first-run list. Their live-action Moana<\/a>, now out of the top 10, has made only $293 million globally. Rounding out the top 10 is Vishwanath and Sons<\/a>, which crept in with $1.76 million.<\/p>\n Beyond the Top 10: Minions & Monsters Drops Out, while the Re-Release of Your Name Nearly Squeaks In<\/p>\n Minions & Monsters<\/a> may not have been as big of a winner as the other films in its franchise, but it is certainly a winner in critics\u2019 hearts, garnering the best score of them all with 86%. It grossed $1.5 million, falling out of the top 10, to put its domestic total over $180 million. Globally it is over $492 million with an $85 million production budget. Meanwhile, GKIDS released the animated Your Name<\/a> in theaters for its 10th Anniversary. In 675 theaters it grossed $1.58 million.<\/p>\n Black Bear financed the production of Andrew Patterson\u2019s The Rivals of Amziah King<\/a>, which debuted all the way back at South By Southwest in March 2025. After deciding to take up distribution themselves, they then ignored any major film festivals in the U.S., leaving the buzz of that premiere to be forgotten. This weekend they opened the film with an 89% Tomatometer score into 632 theaters, where it grossed $1.03 million. This is only the fifth film of their distribution arm. They also financed their previous release, Tuner, and grabbed distribution rights at the end of last September after its showings at the Telluride and Toronto fests. It went on to play multiple festivals across North America, including Sundance, Florida, San Francisco, Dallas, and the Chicago Critics Film Festival (which I produce). It was released in May and has grossed $4.51 million in a limited release.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Jane Schoenbrun\u2019s Teenage Sex and Death At Camp Miasma<\/a> expanded to 54 theaters this weekend. The Mubi released grossed $907,000 for a total of $1.28 million. A24 only expanded their last film, I Saw The TV Glow, into 21 theaters in its second weekend, where it grossed $195,119 and was at $367,773 after 10 days. I Saw the TV Glow\u2019s third week was $1.001 million in 469 theaters. Miasma\u2019s numbers are similar to Todd Haynes\u2019 Far From Heaven, which made $902,667 in weekend two and was up to $1.25 million. Keep expanding the film with a 96% Tomatometer score, Mubi.<\/p>\n Speaking of A24, they expanded Matt Johnson\u2019s Tony<\/a> into 37 theaters, where it grossed $707,000 for a total of $1.23 million. The Shawshank Redemption was in 37 theaters in its second weekend back in 1994, when it grossed $604,259. A24\u2019s release of Greta Gerwig\u2019s Lady Bird also expanded to 37 theaters, where it grossed $1.19 million. Both Tony and Miasma are amongst the top second weekend per-theater averages of 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n The top 10 now includes Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($32,149), The Invite ($25,164), The Odyssey ($22,837), Tony ($19,108), Teenage Sex and Death At Camp Miasma ($16,796), Toy Story 5 ($16,007), The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($15,893), Pillion ($14,636), Michael ($13,756), and Project Hail Mary ($13,260).<\/p>\n Finally, Oscilloscope\u2019s pickup of Sundance film, Union County<\/a>, made $68,000 in ten theaters.<\/p>\n On The Vine: Another Crowded Week Led by Jason Statham and a New Insidious Movie<\/p>\n Another crowded week is in store, leading with Insidious: Out of the Further<\/a>, the sixth film in the horror franchise. Jason Statham is back trying to stop an international conspiracy in Mutiny<\/a> from Lionsgate. Black Bear has Leslie Mann, Isla Fisher, Michelle Buteau, and Anna Faris taking a Spa Weekend<\/a>. Noomi Rapace missed out and was sent to a Hot Spot<\/a> from Focus.
