EDMONTON — More than 5,000 people are expected in Edmonton next month for a national convention focused on carbon capture as governments and industry work toward agreements on the proposed Pathways project.

Carbon Capture Canada 2026 will run Sept. 15 to 17 at the Edmonton Convention Centre, bringing together representatives from government, industry, investment and technology sectors.

Organizers say more than 100 companies will exhibit at the event, with representatives expected from more than 50 countries.

The convention comes after Canada, Alberta and the Oil Sands Alliance signed a memorandum of understanding July 2 concerning the Pathways carbon capture project.

Definitive agreements related to the project are expected this fall.

“The timing of this year’s convention could not be better,” said Nick Samain, senior vice-president with event organizer dmg events.

“We’re meeting in September, directly between July’s Pathways MOU and the definitive decisions expected this fall.”

The conference is expected to feature more than 150 speakers discussing carbon capture policy, investment, infrastructure, financing and technology.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is among the scheduled speakers, along with Oil Sands Alliance president Kendall Dilling and Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation CEO Chana Martineau.

Representatives from Natural Resources Canada and the Indonesian government are also scheduled to participate.

The three-day event will include discussions on carbon markets, direct air capture, industrial decarbonization and the commercialization of emerging carbon capture technologies.

Organizers say the convention will also include a trade exhibition, technical sessions and meetings involving project developers, policymakers, investors and technology providers.

Carbon Capture Canada is entering its fifth year and is billed by organizers as Canada’s only national convention dedicated exclusively to carbon capture, utilization and storage.
