Nathanial Rai had been swept off his feet along the California coast, was rescued by a 16-year-old lifeguard<\/a> \u2013 and was now sitting in the Oval Office with Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Of the rescuer, Ryder Williams<\/a>, Trump said to Nathanial: \u201cHe\u2019s a real hero. I don\u2019t know if I\u2019d do it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t, probably. You\u2019re lucky I wasn\u2019t on the service that day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathanial, 10, wore a dark suit and maroon tie and sat on a gold couch aside his father and Trump. Across from Nathanial was Ryder, and both watched Trump speak of their ordeal, a video of which went viral.<\/p>\n

Trump met the lifeguard and Nathanial after saying the teen deserved a civilian honor. Trump previously said on social media that he also would be inviting Ryder to the White House to reward his bravery.<\/p>\n

Dramatic video of the rescue went viral in late July. It showed Ryder clinging to Nathaniel as pounding waves repeatedly crash over them. The pair disappeared from view and reemerged after several seconds as the wave receded.<\/p>\n

A second lifeguard, Aaron Bohnen, was eventually able to help get them both back to shore at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz.<\/p>\n

Trump initially commented on the video in response to a post from his son, Eric Trump, who said Ryder deserved \u201cthe highest civilian honor\u201d.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Nathanial\u2019s father, Sumit, told the Associated Press of Ryder: \u201cWhat he did, I can never repay. I\u2019m forever grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n

As NBC Bay Area reported<\/a>, Ryder\u2019s rescue of Nathanial unfolded as California state lawmakers reviewed proposed legislation that would officially make lifeguards first responders.<\/p>\n

The outlet noted that analysts say giving lifeguards first responder status would bring them more professional recognition, support and resources \u2013 and could offer them better worker protections and benefits.<\/p>\n

NBC Bay Area spoke with some people who could not believe lifeguards were not already first responders. But the outlet also spoke with John Laird, a Santa Cruz state senator, who said such a designation was not straightforward.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, lifeguards are first responders, but first responders also go through this rigorous training, so you\u2019d have to decide \u2013 because in the peace officer standards training you go through eight months of training \u2013 so you\u2019d have to decide what\u2019s appropriate here,\u201d NBC Bay Area quoted Laird as saying.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow does it work? How does it get designated? What training comes with it? Who pays for it?\u201d<\/p>\n
