The Louisville Cardinals football program will once again honor native son and boxing icon Muhammad Ali by wearing all-black alternate uniforms against Stanford on Oct. 31.

The uniforms feature an oversized “Louisville” wordmark across the chest in a font similar to Ali’s signature Everlast boxing gloves and trunks, while the gold accents pay tribute to his championship pedigree.

The three gold stripes on the collar and down the sides of the pants, as well as the Cardinals’ logo at the base of the collar and right hip, bring to mind the gold medal Ali – known then as Cassius Clay – won during the 1960 Rome Olympics.

He notably threw the original medal into the Ohio River out of anger after he was refused service at a “whites-only” restaurant in Louisville shortly after the Games, then received a replacement at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

The gold circles on the collar and hip also mimic the shape of the world WBA and WBC championship belts that Ali won during his career, as he was the first boxer in history to capture the heavyweight title on three separate occasions.

The uniforms are complete with black helmets that display Louisville’s primary logo in white and gold on the sides to match the wordmark and numbers, while an Everlast-inspired “Cardinals” wordmark appears on the back bumper.

As mentioned, this marks the third time that the football program has honored Ali, who passed away in 2016 following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease, going 1-1 in those contests.

That includes all-white uniforms with a wordmark inspired by his robe in a win over Boston College in 2019, as well as a red and gold design that celebrated his historic “Rumble in the Jungle” bout against George Foreman in a loss to SMU in 2024.

Photos courtesy of @LouisvilleFB on X/Twitter.

The Louisville Cardinals football program will once again honor native son and boxing icon Muhammad Ali by wearing…

[447
703,49,48,82
post-861972","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-boxing","tag-boxing","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-sports
["GET
![""]("https://www.newsbeep.com/ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/louisville-cardinals-4-1000x563.jpg")
