A Brampton hospital is continuing to lead the way in how dementia patients are treated in acute care, earning its fourth consecutive reaccreditation for an approach that puts their emotional needs alongside their physical health.<\/p>\n

William Osler Health System\u2019s Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE) Unit at Brampton Civic Hospital has once again received the highest distinction for its implementation of The Butterfly Approach, an emotion-based, person-centred model of dementia care developed by the United Kingdom-based consultancy Meaningful Care Matters.<\/p>\n

Osler remains the only acute-care hospital in the world accredited in The Butterfly Approach.<\/p>\n

The latest reaccreditation is significant because it recognizes that the approach has continued to be incorporated into the day-to-day care provided on the ACE Unit since Brampton Civic became the world\u2019s first acute-care hospital to implement and receive accreditation for it in 2023.<\/p>\n

Rather than treating dementia patients according to a standardized routine, the Butterfly Approach focuses on understanding each person\u2019s life experiences, interests, emotions and individual needs.<\/p>\n

That philosophy is also reflected in the design of the ACE Unit.<\/p>\n

The Brampton unit features brightly coloured spaces, interactive activity stations, games, puzzles and sensory elements intended to create a more engaging and calming environment for patients living with dementia.<\/p>\n

The goal is to make a hospital stay feel less clinical and more familiar while helping patients maintain their emotional, cognitive and social well-being.<\/p>\n

The approach has previously been credited with improving outcomes at the Brampton unit, including fewer falls, reduced medication use and improved patient behaviours.<\/p>\n

Dr. Sudip Saha, Osler\u2019s Medical Director of Seniors\u2019 Health and Division Head of Geriatric Medicine, said the need for approaches such as this will only grow as the population ages and more people live with dementia.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs our population continues to age and the number of people living with dementia increases, it is essential that we continue to evolve how we deliver care to our community,\u201d Saha said. \u201cThis reaccreditation reflects our team\u2019s unwavering commitment to providing compassionate, evidence-informed care that recognizes every patient as an individual.\u201d<\/p>\n

Osler first introduced the Butterfly Approach to its ACE Unit in 2023, marking a major shift in how dementia care was delivered in an acute-care hospital.<\/p>\n

The model emphasizes that caring for someone with dementia involves more than treating their physical illness. Staff are encouraged to understand the person\u2019s lived experience and use that knowledge to build meaningful connections.<\/p>\n

The latest reaccreditation confirms that the approach has become an ongoing part of care at Brampton Civic rather than simply a new program introduced several years ago.<\/p>\n

The recognition comes as Osler serves a rapidly growing and aging population across Brampton, Caledon and surrounding communities.<\/p>\n

For Brampton Civic, the reaccreditation means its pioneering approach to dementia care continues to meet the standards of the organization that developed the model \u2014 four years after the hospital first made history by becoming the world\u2019s first acute-care setting to adopt it.<\/p>\n
