{"id":862218,"date":"2026-08-18T06:38:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T06:38:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/862218\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T06:38:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T06:38:17","slug":"pro-trail-runner-attacked-by-bear-in-alaska","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/862218\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro trail runner attacked by bear in Alaska"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alaska trail runner Klaire Rhodes reported that she was attacked by a brown bear on Thursday morning while running alone on her home state\u2019s Chugach trails.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DcEPbJdATeY\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram post<\/a>, Rhodes wrote that she came away with what she described as \u201crelatively minor injuries, with the most severe being a deep puncture wound to my left hip and claw and teeth marks on my body.\u201d The North Face athlete used bear spray during the encounter and was able to make it back to the trailhead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA nightmare come to life\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rhodes didn\u2019t share the full sequence of events, saying she wanted to avoid the \u201cunsolicited opinions\u201d that tend to follow a story like this online. \u201cThe moment felt like a nightmare come to life,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Chugach trails are a major part of Rhodes\u2019s life and training. \u201cRunning in the Chugach is where I feel most at home,\u201d she wrote, while acknowledging that the area is also the bear\u2019s home. \u201cDespite <a href=\"https:\/\/runningmagazine.ca\/trail-running\/trail-runner-safety-are-you-actually-prepared\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all the precautions<\/a> in the world, it\u2019s just a risk that a lot of us choose to take to live life in the way we love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/runningmagazine.ca\/the-scene\/runner-injured-in-bear-attack-in-squamish-b-c\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Runner injured in bear attack in Squamish, B.C.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>A disrupted lead-up to Europe<\/p>\n<p>The timing is difficult for Rhodes, who says she had been preparing to race in Europe in less than two weeks. Her website lists the CCC in Chamonix, France, among her upcoming races, though she said she was unsure whether the attack would affect those plans. \u201cI\u2019m bummed to not be finishing out my training block in the way I wanted,\u201d Rhodes wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Rhodes is one of Alaska\u2019s top trail and mountain runners, and signed with The North Face in 2024. She took second in the 50K race at Speedgoat Mountain Races in July, and first at The Big Alta in March; she has also won the iconic Mount Marathon Race in Seward, Alaska, for the past three years.<\/p>\n<p>For now, she said, the training week has turned into \u201ca big weekend of couch time.\u201d But she also made clear that she expects to be back on the trails before long. \u201cI\u2019m really lucky that I\u2019ll be back to doing my thing relatively soon,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adfg.alaska.gov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alaska Department of Fish and Game<\/a> confirmed that on Aug. 13, a woman running alone was injured in a brown bear encounter on the Wolverine Bowl trail near Anchorage\u2019s Prospect Heights. The department said the runner used bear spray, self-rescued and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
