Buss, who has more or less taken charge of the organization since the death of her father Jerry in 2013, appears to be pushing back on the stunning move, one that would put an end to the Buss family’s decades-long stewardship of the iconic NBA franchise.

A familiar story. Enter the fictional Roy family.

For all of its rich people satire and classist commentary, Succession can be boiled down to a simple premise: how does a powerful family-run business change hands? Comparing the Roys to the Busses is not fair to the latter, in many ways. The HBO show’s supremely hateable characters are rumored to be inspired by Rupert Murdoch and his family, a real-life media dynasty and global empire whose power dynamics arguably operate at a much different level than that of the Buss household.

Still, there are some eerie similarities between the Roys and Busses that haven’t gone unnoticed. After Jeanie replaced Jim with new Lakers vice president of basketball operations Magic Johnson, Johnny and Jim formed a plan to sap some of Jeanie’s power via an election for the team’s board of directors.
