President Donald Trump late Tuesday slammed the brakes on a wave of tariffs that were set to hit Canada at midnight.<\/p>\n
On social media<\/a>, Trump wrote: \u201cI have paused the 50% Tariffs against Canada, that were scheduled to kick in tomorrow morning for a three day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!\u201d<\/p>\n Trump did not provide further details, except to reference the Keystone XL pipeline, which he said \u201cmay be awoken from the grave!\u201d <\/p>\n Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the deal.<\/p>\n The 50% duties would have impacted about $20 billion worth of U.S. imports from Canada, according to the U.S. Trade Representative\u2019s office. The import taxes would have hit products ranging from hockey sticks, to some building materials, liquors and certain kinds of clothing.<\/p>\n The last-minute deal came after more than a week of furious meetings and technical talks.<\/p>\n On Monday afternoon, Prime Minister Mark Carney described the talks with the Trump administration as \u201cvery delicate and intense\u201d but did not provide any further details. Carney and Trump spoke later that afternoon and again late Tuesday, Carney\u2019s office told NBC News.<\/p>\n The prime minister previously said the threatened duties were a \u201cdirect violation\u201d of the U.S.-Canada-Mexico Agreement, which Trump pursued and inked in his first term.<\/p>\n The U.S. Chamber of Commerce warned in a Tuesday statement that in the event of no deal, \u201cthe introduction of higher tariffs would damage both economies, drive up costs for U.S. families, further disrupt critical supply chains, and risk the 13 million American jobs that depend on\u201d the North American trade pact.<\/p>\n The tariffs that were set to be imposed would have been the first-ever use of Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930<\/a>. The law allows the White House to implement duties of up to 50% on any foreign trading partner that \u201cdiscriminates\u201d against U.S. commerce.<\/p>\n In talks with their counterparts, Canadian officials were not only seeking to have the Section 338 tariffs scrapped entirely, but also sought lower Section 232 tariffs on industrial products such as steel and aluminum, CBC News and Bloomberg have reported.<\/p>\n The U.S. Chamber of Commerce said Tuesday that lower duties on Canada would be a \u201ca boon to U.S. consumers, producers, farmers and manufacturers.\u201d<\/p>\n A sticking point on Monday and Tuesday appeared to be a request for lower automobile duties, according to Bloomberg and Reuters, which also reported that U.S. officials did not want to cut current 25% tariffs on that sector to anything lower than 15%.<\/p>\n Trump did not say in his brief social media post if the duties would be lowered.<\/p>\n U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer earlier said that reasoning behind the threatened 50% duties was effectively payback for Canada\u2019s retaliation against prior tranches of Trump\u2019s tariffs.<\/p>\n \u201cThe policy basis for [Wednesday\u2019s] duties are related to measures that Canada took against the United States,\u201d U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said<\/a> last week. \u201cI\u2019ve got two countries in the world that have retaliated against the United States for trade measures: the People\u2019s Republic of China and Canada,\u201d said Greer. \u201cThat\u2019s not the kind of company you really want to be running in.\u201d<\/p>\n Last year, Trump briefly responded to China\u2019s retaliation by raising tariffs into the triple digits. Talks between Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and China\u2019s vice premier over months eventually diffused that tension and tariffs were lowered.<\/p>\n Trump has also aimed his anger at Canada repeatedly. At one point, he became enraged by the Province of Ontario, which ran a TV ad<\/a> during the 2025 MLB World Series telecast. The video utilized edited clips of Republican former President Ronald Reagan in order to criticize Trump\u2019s trade policy.<\/p>\n
