A prominent Sikh activist with deep ties to Brampton has once again been warned by the RCMP that his life is in danger, but he says he has no intention of abandoning his campaign for the creation of an independent Sikh homeland.<\/p>\n

Inderjeet Singh Gosal, who now lives in Caledon, received a written \u201cDuty to Warn\u201d notice from the RCMP on Aug. 14 advising him that police had determined a threat had been made against his life.<\/p>\n

The notice says police considered the threat \u201ccredible, serious and imminent,\u201d although officers said they could not provide Gosal with specific details about the nature of the threat.<\/p>\n

The RCMP also offered Gosal assistance and entry into the Witness Protection Program, according to Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), the organization behind the global Khalistan Referendum campaign.<\/p>\n

Gosal declined.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would rather take India\u2019s bullet than stop campaigning for the Khalistan Referendum,\u201d he said in a statement released Monday.<\/p>\n

He said he plans to continue organizing the Oct. 18 Khalistan Referendum in Edmonton, describing the vote as a democratic exercise that he believes the Indian government is attempting to suppress.<\/p>\n

The latest warning is not the first time Canadian authorities have told Gosal that he may be targeted.<\/p>\n

Gosal has previously received multiple RCMP warnings about threats to his life. In February 2024, his Brampton home, which was under construction at the time, was hit by gunfire. Peel Regional Police confirmed officers responded to a shooting at the residence, although police said at the time it was too early to determine whether Gosal had been specifically targeted because of his political activism.<\/p>\n

The RCMP has previously said it uncovered links between agents of the Indian government and homicides and violent acts in Canada, as well as threats against members of the South Asian community, particularly Sikhs advocating for greater autonomy in India.<\/p>\n

Gosal has repeatedly attributed the threats against him to the Indian government or people linked to it because of his involvement in the Khalistan movement. The latest RCMP warning, however, does not identify who made the threat.<\/p>\n

His latest warning also comes months after an Ontario court stayed a series of firearms charges against him.<\/p>\n

Gosal was arrested in September 2025 after Ontario Provincial Police stopped a vehicle in Whitby. Police alleged a loaded handgun was found in the vehicle, and Gosal and two other men were charged with firearms-related offences. The charges against the other two men were later dropped. At the time, he said he needed the gun for protection.<\/p>\n

In March 2026, an Ontario court stayed the charges against Gosal. The stay suspended the prosecution for one year, meaning it was not a finding of guilt or acquittal; the charges can be revived during that period.<\/p>\n

The firearms case is one of several reasons Gosal has become a recurring figure in Brampton-area news.<\/p>\n

He lived in Brampton and became closely associated with the Khalistan referendum movement, which advocates for the creation of an independent Sikh state in Punjab. Brampton has hosted previous non-binding referendum votes organized by SFJ and has been a focal point for demonstrations surrounding the movement.<\/p>\n

Gosal was also charged with assault with a weapon following violent demonstrations outside a Hindu temple in Brampton in November 2024. He was released on conditions.<\/p>\n

His profile rose considerably following the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian Sikh activist and organizer of the Khalistan referendum who was shot outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, B.C. Gosal subsequently became a leading Canadian organizer of the referendum campaign.<\/p>\n

The Nijjar killing became the centre of a major diplomatic dispute between Canada and India after then-prime minister Justin Trudeau said there were credible allegations potentially linking Indian government agents to the murder. India has denied involvement.<\/p>\n

Gosal has also been closely associated with Sikhs for Justice leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who has been the subject of an alleged assassination plot in the United States.<\/p>\n

The latest RCMP warning comes as Canada and India continue efforts to repair relations following years of diplomatic tensions.<\/p>\n

For Gosal, however, the renewed warning has not changed his plans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI appreciate the RCMP for informing me about these active threats to my life,\u201d he said. \u201cBut how can the Carney government justify expanding business and diplomatic engagement with India while the Modi government continues to be accused of targeting Canadian citizens on Canadian soil?\u201d<\/p>\n

He says he intends to continue his campaign despite the risks.<\/p>\n

For Brampton, where Gosal once lived and where the Khalistan movement has been at the centre of protests, political debates and public-safety concerns, the latest warning adds another chapter to the ongoing tensions surrounding the controversial independence campaign.<\/p>\n
