Though the trade deadline has passed, trades can still happen if a player\u2019s contract hasn\u2019t been selected to a 40-man roster at any point during the season. MLBTR took a look at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2026\/08\/how-to-acquire-players-after-mlb-trade-deadline-3.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">post-deadline transactions<\/a> earlier this month. Tampa is getting cash in return, per <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kevin_barral\/status\/2090132860204204285?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kevin Barral of Fish on First<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The way an assignment clause usually works is that all 29 other clubs, apart from the signing team, must be notified when a player triggers one. If any of them are willing to give him a roster spot, the signing club must give the player a spot themselves or trade him to a club that will. Topkin says Driscoll triggered an assignment clause but Barral says this is just a minor league trade.
