{"id":864187,"date":"2026-08-19T21:20:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T21:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/864187\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T21:20:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T21:20:11","slug":"opposition-reacts-to-details-of-new-churchill-falls-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/864187\/","title":{"rendered":"Opposition Reacts to Details of New Churchill Falls Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/jim-and-john-1.jpg\" class=\"header-image\" alt=\"Opposition Reacts to Details of New Churchill Falls Deal\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Liberal Leader John Hogan (L) and NDP Leader Jim Dinn (R) (VOCM News)<\/p>\n<p>The opposition parties were briefed on the details of the deal reached on Churchill Falls and the Liberals say most concerning to them is the loss of an escalator on the sale of Gull Island power.<\/p>\n<p>Liberal Leader John Hogan says the previous government \u201cfought hard\u201d to secure an escalating price on Gull Island power to ensure the value increased over time.<\/p>\n<p>He says under the agreement, the price Quebec pays Newfoundland and Labrador\u00a0for Gull Island power does not increase in time, and\u00a0Hogan claims, the price is structured to drop over the life of the agreement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/john-hogan-scrum.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-307543\" class=\"size-full wp-image-307543\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/john-hogan-scrum.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-307543\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(VOCM News)<\/p>\n<p>He says it\u2019s \u201chard to believe\u201d that the province would agree to another 50-year agreement without an escalating price.<\/p>\n<p>Hogan also points to NL\u2019s ability to wheel power through Quebec to U.S. markets.
