QUEBEC \u2014 Premier Christine Fr\u00e9chette says she is far from being reassured that a potential Canada-U.S. trade deal<\/a> is good for Quebec.<\/p>\n

Emerging after an hour and a half conference call meeting with the other Canadian premiers and Prime Minister Mark Carney, Fr\u00e9chette said she needs more answers from the federal government.<\/p>\n

For now she cannot sign on to any agreement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many elements that are not clear,\u201d Fr\u00e9chette told reporters waiting outside her Quebec City office. \u201cThere is a lot of information that was not given. I require additional information from Ottawa before I can take a position on what follows.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did not get answers to my questions. We are talking again tomorrow and I expect to get these clarifications.\u201d<\/p>\n

She repeated, as she has all along, that the supply management system and an exception for Quebec\u2019s language and culture cannot be on the table. <\/p>\n

She expressed the same concerns earlier on her way into a meeting of the Quebec cabinet earlier and by the evening she still had them.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the moment I don\u2019t have a complete portrait so I can\u2019t take a position,\u201d Fr\u00e9chette said. \u201cI have to get more information from Ottawa. I asked many questions and they\u2019ve noted them.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you lower tariffs by only five per cent, it\u2019s bad news. If you lower tariffs by 25 per cent we are in another world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials confirmed that Carney has requested that Quebec and the other provinces return American alcohol to the shelves as part of the deal, but Fr\u00e9chette was not ready to agree.<\/p>\n

She said that is a decision \u201cQuebec and only Quebec will take.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWill the information I am given tomorrow or after tomorrow will reassure me? This remains to be seen,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is too much missing information to know if this is what we need or not.<\/p>\n
