Their overall score did tick up slightly, though we\u2019re giving them faint praise. Dan Shulman garnered most of the praise, with graders calling it an \u201cabsolute masterclass in the craft\u201d and noting how he \u201ctreats his audience like intelligent adults.\u201d Graders applauded his ability to balance high-stakes excitement with tactical pitch breakdowns \u201cwithout hijacking the game.\u201d\u00a0Graders noted that Siddall is\u00a0\u201cstill finding his footing\u201d as a full-time replacement for Martinez, but viewers had \u201ca lot of respect\u201d for his analytical work.<\/p>\n \u201cDespite the loss of the great Buck Martinez, Shulman is still great, and it\u2019s a reliable broadcast,\u201d said one grader.<\/p>\n 7. Detroit Tigers (Jason Benetti, Dan Dickerson, Andy Dirks, Dan Petry, Carlos Pe\u00f1a, Todd Jones): 2.69 Most common grade: A (41.5% of votes) No surprise to see the Tigers broadcast back up here, and many graders can\u2019t say enough about how much the arrival of Benetti has transformed the vibes. Benetti received plenty of praise for being\u201cfun, entertaining, but also super good at explaining the game.\u201d Other graders rated the overall crew highly, saying it\u2019s the\u201cbest there is by a long shot.\u201d Benetti\u2019s playful banter with Dirks and Petry \u201cis always good for a laugh\u201d but also provides \u201cinteresting\u201d tactical insight. A minor contingent of graders cautioned that Benetti can occasionally \u201ctalk too much\u201d or get sidetracked by roving reporters during gameplay. Overall, it\u2019s clear the Tigers\u2019 booth is widely considered an elite TV broadcast.<\/p>\n \u201cNever know what\u2019s gonna happen in any game\u2019s broadcast (in a good way),\u201d wrote one person. \u201cNo real weak links up and down the broadcast lineup and very enjoyable to watch\/listen.\u201d<\/p>\n 6. Philadelphia Phillies Tom McCarthy, Scott Franzke, John Kruk, Ben Davis, Rub\u00e9n Amaro Jr., Cole Hamels): 2.73 Most common grade: A (35.5% of votes) The positive feedback on the Phillies booth is driven by the \u201centertaining\u201d and \u201cimpossible to predict\u201d dynamic between McCarthy and Kruk, but there\u2019s more to their appreciation of the broadcast. Graders describe listening to McCarthy and Kruk as \u201can absolute pleasure,\u201d highlighting that their on-air chemistry is \u201cfantastic.\u201d Kruk\u2019s casual, humorous commentary makes broadcasts \u201cfeel like watching a game with a friend,\u201d though a few opposing fans find the booth overly \u201chomerish.\u201d Graders also praise Franzke as one of the finest play-by-play callers in the sport. Hamels has also received positive notes for his recent broadcast appearances.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cTom McCarthy is potentially America\u2019s most underrated sportscaster,\u201d wrote one grader. \u201cJohn Kruk is a treasure.\u201d<\/p>\n 5. Chicago Cubs (Jon Sciambi, Alex Cohen, Jim Deshaies, Rick Sutcliffe, Taylor McGregor, Elise Menaker, Ryan Dempster, Cliff Floyd): 2.77 Most common grade: B (37.9% of votes) Seeing the Cubs broadcast this high in the rankings is no surprise. A lot of that is due to the core duo of Jon \u201cBoog\u201d Sciambi and Jim Deshaies, whom they call an \u201celite pairing\u201d with \u201cincredible back-and-forth chatter.\u201d Sciambi\u2019s national broadcasting duties cause frequent absences that frustrate some viewers.\u00a0\u201cThere is a high percentage of broadcasts without one or both of them, and things fall off a cliff,\u201d said one grader. Sideline reporter McGregor received many positive mentions for her field reporting. When fully intact, the booth ranks among the best, but graders do warn that substitute rotations keep this broadcast from climbing even higher.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cJim Deshaies deserves more recognition,\u201d wrote one grader. \u201cInformed, entertaining, humorous, experienced. Boog is great, and Cohen deserves his own booth.\u201d<\/p>\n 4. New York Yankees (Michael Kay, Ryan Ruocco, Paul O\u2019Neill, Joe Girardi, David Cone, Meredith Marakovitis): 2.86 Most common grade: A (51.4% of votes) The biggest mover in the rankings this year is the Yankees broadcast. They also received the most votes of any booth (over 1,000 more than the next-highest one). We\u2019ll get to that in a second.\u00a0Despite garnering a significant number of A grades, the Yankees broadcast generated sharply polarized reactions. Cone was universally praised as \u201cbrilliant\u201d for his \u201csophisticated analytical breakdowns\u201d and commentary. Kay draws mixed reviews, with critics arguing he is \u201cway too full of himself\u201d and \u201crepetitive.\u201d O\u2019Neill brings the \u201ccomic relief\u201d and \u201cfan-favorite status,\u201d though some view his analytical contribution as \u201cbasic.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThis is the epitome of a professional team,\u201d said one grader. \u201cBrilliant analytics; they tell it like it is, and yes, they are a Yankees broadcast, but they do not hate on the other team.\u201d<\/p>\n Much of the Yankees broadcast\u2019s meteoric rise this year can likely be credited to Michael Kay\u2019s<\/a> social media campaign<\/a> to drive votes<\/a>. That\u2019s well within the rules, but we noted that Kay\u2019s motivation for driving votes was that \u201cI think pitting broadcasts against each other is disgusting.\u201d He wanted to prove a point (especially given how the Yankees usually fare versus the Mets<\/a>). We admire Kay\u2019s defense of the broadcasting brotherhood\/sisterhood. Still, if the point was to prove these rankings are some sham, and it resulted in the Yankees getting their highest ranking ever (by a mile), we\u2019re curious what, exactly, that point is.<\/p>\n 3. New York Mets (Gary Cohen, Steve Gelbs, Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, Todd Zeile, Daniel Murphy): 2.97 Most common grade: A (53.4% of votes) The trio of Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling (\u201cGKR\u201d) received plenty of praise for being the \u201cgold standard\u201d and \u201cthe best booth in Major League Baseball.\u201d Graders praised their \u201cchemistry,\u201d \u201ccomedic moments,\u201d and \u201celite baseball knowledge,\u201d calling them \u201cunpredictable, knowledgeable, endlessly enjoyable, and the best in the business.\u201d Viewers particularly respect their objectivity, admiring that they \u201caren\u2019t afraid to rip the team when deserved\u201d rather than acting as team boosters. Gelbs was praised for \u201cfitting in seamlessly\u201d into the group\u2019s lighthearted dynamic. Even when the team struggles on the field, fans tune in \u201cjust to hear what these guys have to say.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cBest booth in the game,\u201d said one person. \u201cTell it like it is, whether the Mets are good or bad, and they have a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n 2. San Francisco Giants (Duane Kuiper, Dave Flemming, Jon Miller, Glen Kuiper, Mike Krukow, Javier L\u00f3pez, Shawn Estes, Hunter Pence): 3.02 Most common grade: A (50% of votes) For a last hurrah in its current incarnation, the Giants broadcast is going out in style. San Francisco\u2019s \u201clegendary\u201d commentary team of Duane Kuiper, Mike Krukow, Jon Miller, and Dave Flemming remains deeply cherished. \u201cThey are the best, and you know it,\u201d said one grader. The lifelong rapport between \u201cKruk and Kuip\u201d sets the standard for local broadcasting, blending humor, authority, insight, and \u201cemotional connection.\u201d With Krukow retiring<\/a>, grader sentiment was tinged with deep nostalgia and affection for him and the many years he\u2019s been in their lives. Graders write that \u201cKruk and Kuip not being in the Hall of Fame yet is an embarrassment to baseball.\u201d Perhaps that will change soon.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are none better,\u201d said one person. \u201cIt will not be the same next year without Krukow, but because of the other big three, it will still be great.\u201d<\/p>\n
