Two people are hurt and a suspect is in custody after an apparent attack during early morning prayers at Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton on Friday.<\/p>\n

Edmonton police got a 911 call at 5:08 a.m. Northeast Branch Patrol officers responded to a reported stabbing at the Nanaksar Sikh Temple in the area of 14 Street and Horsehill Rd. <\/p>\n

Upon arrival, an adult male suspect was located and arrested.\u00a0Officials say two adult males were treated on scene for non-life-threatening injuries.<\/p>\n

Police were on scene and the gurdwara was closed to the public as the investigation continued. WSO says it is awaiting further information about the circumstances and motive.<\/p>\n

The incident comes amid several recent incidents involving Alberta\u2019s Sikh community, including threatening calls to two Calgary gurdwaras and the reported assault of a Sikh truck driver at an Edmonton Walmart earlier this month.<\/p>\n

WSO President Danish Singh said the organization has been warning that anti-Sikh hate is rising in Canada.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are deeply troubled by what has happened at Nanaksar Gurdwara this morning, but unfortunately we cannot say that we are surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n

WSO is calling on Edmonton police to investigate whether hate or bias played a role in the incident and is urging governments to strengthen security measures at places of worship.<\/p>\n
