A 35-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder after a woman was found dead in a Montreal apartment earlier this week.<\/p>\n
Betoven \u00c9tienne appeared at the Montreal courthouse Friday afternoon to face charges for the death of 41-year-old Kerline Jean, as well as an additional assault charge involving a second person.<\/p>\n
According to his lawyer, he pleaded not guilty before the judge and will contest the charges in the near future. He’s due back in court on Nov. 3.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Service de police de la Ville de Montr\u00e9al (SPVM) has indicated this was a case of intimate partner violence.<\/p>\n
The mother of three was killed with a bladed weapon on Monday in an apartment on 39th Avenue, near Paul-Corbeil Street, in the Villeray\u2013Saint-Michel\u2013Parc-Extension borough.\u00a0<\/p>\n
SPVM officers responded to the scene in the afternoon after receiving a 911 call. Upon arrival, they found the woman unresponsive and the man critically injured.<\/p>\n
Police say it was the 16th homicide this year on the island of Montreal.<\/p>\n
