That can make it difficult for prosecutors to prove that a driver knowingly transported illegal cargo.

In some cases involving Brampton drivers, charges have been dismissed or defendants acquitted after courts found there was insufficient evidence that the accused knew drugs were concealed in their loads.

The issue has become particularly important in cases involving multi-million-dollar drug shipments, where the Crown must prove knowledge and intent beyond a reasonable doubt.

Police and border agencies have increasingly warned that organized crime groups are attempting to exploit legitimate commercial transportation networks to move drugs across the border.

A major joint police investigation concluded last month resulted in 21 people facing a combined 102 criminal charges. Investigators executed search warrants at commercial and residential properties in Brampton as part of the investigation.

The enforcement efforts have also reached trucking company owners and logistics executives, with several Brampton-area operators facing allegations related to drug-smuggling conspiracies.

For legitimate trucking companies, the cases can mean increased scrutiny, border delays and higher operating and insurance costs.

Brampton is one of the GTA’s major transportation and logistics hubs, making its trucking industry an important part of the regional economy.

The latest arrest involving Singh is now before the courts, but the growing number of Brampton-linked cases shows the challenges facing the industry extend well beyond a single truck or border crossing.

INsauga’s Editorial Standards and Policies

Last 30 Days: 31,789 Votes

All Time: 1,475,846 Votes

    661 VOTES
Do you plan on going to the CNE this summer?

Win two tickets to The Great Outdoors Comedy Festival (GOCF)

Enter for an exclusive chance to win 2 tickets to Great Outdoors Comedy Festival (GOCF), a $500 Gift Card to Square One Shopping Centre, and a Visit Mississauga Swag Bag. The approximate retail value of the prize is $1,000.

“*” indicates required fields

The Blue Water Bridge between Sarnia and Port Huron has emerged as a recurring location in cases involving…

[194339
51759,49,48
post-866955","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-brampton","tag-brampton","tag-ca","tag-canada
["GET
