He’s likely not wrong.

Last place isn’t really flattering. But does it really matter for the Avalanche?

Looking at just the surface of the circumstance, this would be discouraging. The truth is that at this point in time, the prospect ranking isn’t that important to this team.

Colorado didn’t land in this position by accident. They have been operating in a win-now mode for years, and that comes with a cost. You end up trading premium draft capital and using some of your best young assets to improve the here and now.

When a team is building an NHL roster around Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, it is going to deplete the pipeline.

So, the team has paid a substantial price and they did it willingly in order to chase another Stanley Cup.

The question that remains is how much longer they can afford to pay that price.

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images / IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

This should not come as a surprise to anyone. Colorado has been on this track for years.

The Avalanche have traded every one of their first-round picks dating back to the 2024 NHL Draft. Looking forward, they don’t even own their 2027 or 2028 first-round selections.

That’s going to leave a mark on any prospect system. But there is more to the story.

Teams like Colorado aren’t trying to collect draft picks. They aren’t hoping to be competitive several years from now. They are actively participating in a plan to maximize their championship window that exists right now.

The Stanley Cup is within reach. MacKinnon and Makar are superstars. Martin Necas is coming off a career-best season in which he posted 100 points. This is a roster that is capable of competing right now.

Yes, draft picks and prospects have value. A lot of value, and there will be a price to be paid for these decisions.

The Stanley Cup outweighs it all.

Fabian Lysell Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images / IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

Joe Sakic hasn’t completely ignored what is going on. He recognizes that this organization needs younger options and depth.

Despite not having a first-round draft pick, the team still added nine players during the 2026 NHL Draft. They also made moves to get two 23-year-old forwards in Fedor Svechkov and Zachary L’Heureux from Nashville earlier in the offseason.

Another exactly the same age is Fabian Lysell who brings offensive upside to the team.

No, those names likely don’t substantially improve the ranking of the prospect pipeline, but they do prove that Colorado is paying attention to the issue and looking to the future.

Colorado needs young, affordable NHL contributors and before being able to see them on the ice, it looks like they have taken action to get exactly that.

No one is arguing that Colorado is loaded with young, inexpensive talent. The roster is very veteran-heavy. In fact, it has been suggested that the Avalanche is “old.”

Finding young talent is going to be increasingly more important both as the season and the years go on. Everyone ages, and the team Is going to have to face the fact that the veterans will eventually decline.

There’s also the issue of the salary cap. Having so many seasoned veterans on the roster leaves less and less room to add talent, so cheaper alternatives are a must.

An empty prospect cupboard becomes a problem as the veterans age and sustain injuries.

Colorado Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic celebrates with the Stanley Cup trophy after defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning during game six of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final at Amalie Arena. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports / USA TODAY Sports

The simple answer – yes.

Just not in the way that it looks on the surface.

Colorado’s prospect pool ranking isn’t reason for panic. It doesn’t mean that the organization is constructed poorly. If anything, it may actually point to the fact that the roster is constructed exactly how everyone wants it to be. To win. Right now.

The concern of this ranking comes later. Being ranking 32nd won’t keep the Stanley Cup from coming back to Denver this season.

Colorado does have to start developing the next wave of talent soon, though. The cost of all the win-now mentality will eventually arrive and the bill will have to be paid.

For now, this team can live with being ranked last in one category. They just can’t afford to stay there.

It is hard to argue and easy to prove.
