(Gonzalo Fuentes\/Reuters, Alex Brandon\/AP)<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke to his U.S. counterpart by phone Thursday \u2014 the first time the leaders have spoken since the two sides failed to reach a deal on a trade agreement earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>According to a short readout from the Prime Minister&#8217;s Office, Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump &#8220;discussed current trade challenges, opportunities and shared priorities&#8221; in what officials described as a &#8220;productive and wide-ranging conversation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Carney raised establishing a new economic and security\u00a0relationship between Canada and the U.S., the PMO said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two leaders also discussed how to &#8220;build on President Trump&#8217;s leadership to support long-term peace and security for Ukraine and Europe&#8221; \u2014 an apparent reference to the U.S. effort to cobble together support from\u00a0allies\u00a0to help protect Ukraine from Russia through security guarantees, if those\u00a0two countries can reach a peace deal.<\/p>\n<p>ABOUT THE AUTHOR<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755804548_934_john-paul-j-p-tasker.jpg\" data-cy=\"author-image-img\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"authorprofile-biography\">J.P.
