Flushing Meadows.

Defending champion Jannik Sinner begins his title defence against Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva, while Carlos Alcaraz looks to reclaim the crown he first lifted in 2022.

The Spaniard, fresh from winning Cincinnati, opens against the towering Reilly Opelka and could face a semifinal against Novak Djokovic, who is hunting a record 25th Grand Slam title.

The top half of the draw is anchored by Alexander Zverev, who could face Sinner in the last four, which would be a rematch of this year’s Australian Open final

Elsewhere, last year’s runner-up Taylor Fritz, resurgent home favourite Ben Shelton, and former champion Daniil Medvedev all lurk, but are they serious contenders?

Tournament data-lazy-src="https://www.newsbeep.com/ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/us-open-draw-analysis.jpg"/>

First Quarter: Jannik Sinner’s quest for back-to-back glory

Seeded Players: (1) Jannik Sinner, (5) Jack Draper, (10) Lorenzo Musetti, (14) Tommy Paul, (23) Alexander Bublik, (24) Flavio Cobolli, (27) Denis Shapovalov, (31) Gabriel Diallo

Expected Quarterfinal: Jannik Sinner vs. Jack Draper

Jannik Sinner enters New York aiming to achieve something no man has managed since Roger Federer in 2008: a successful US Open title defence.

Sinner has compiled a 31–4 record in 2025 and a staggering 65–4 mark on hard courts since the start of 2024.

His lead-up included a runner-up showing in Cincinnati, where illness forced him to retire late in the opening set of the final, and he withdrew from the Mixed Doubles this week.

However, I expect him to arrive in New York ready to go; he’s got a good Doctor and Physio in his team after all.

Sinner opens against Vit Kopriva and could face Alexei Popyrin in round two. Denis Shapovalov (27) looms in the third round, with Tommy Paul (14) a likely fourth-round hurdle. While capable, none of them should seriously threaten him.

Alexander Bublik (23), who upset Sinner in Halle earlier this summer, takes on former champion Marin Cilic in an interesting opening round. Bublik on US hard courts isn’t really a force, but he’s always unpredictable.

On the other side of the quarter sits Jack Draper, last year’s semifinalist. The Brit’s path begins gently before potential tests against Gabriel Diallo (31) in round three and Lorenzo Musetti (10) in round four. Draper’s form is the biggest question mark; he hasn’t played a singles match since Wimbledon due to injury, but if healthy, he remains a genuine contender.

Should both men navigate their sections, a quarterfinal clash between Sinner and Draper seems inevitable. The Italian got the better of him in last year’s semifinals, and history suggests he’ll do so again.

Second Quarter: Alexander Zverev is chasing his first Grand Slam crown

Seeded players: (3) Alexander Zverev, (8) Alex de Minaur, (9) Karen Khachanov, (15) Andrey Rublev, (19) Francisco Cerundolo, (22) Ugo Humbert, (25) Felix Auger-Aliassime, (26) Stefanos Tsitsipas

Projected quarterfinal: Alexander Zverev vs Alex de Minaur

Alexander Zverev is still after the elusive Grand Slam, and after being a point away from winning the US Open back in 2020, he’s not been past the quarterfinals here for the past two years.

After a poor Wimbledon, he went to Nadal’s academy, and when he resumed on tour, he reached the semifinals in both Toronto and Cincinnati. I liked how he played those events, with the only question mark being his fitness after he struggled with some sort of illness in Cincy.

Zverev’s path begins with Alejandro Tabilo in the first round. Tabilo was dangerous two years ago, but with a string of poor results, it’s hard to see much trouble there.

Roberto Bautista Agut could follow in round two, while Felix Auger-Aliassime (25) is his projected third-round opponent. A potential clash with Andrey Rublev (15) could await in the last 16. On paper, Zverev has the edge against all of them, though Rublev is always a dangerous test in best-of-five.

Elsewhere in this section lurks the Gael Monfils, still capable of springing upsets. Karen Khachanov (9) and Alex de Minaur (8) headline the bottom half of the quarter and are on a collision course for the fourth round. Khachanov has looked the stronger of the two in recent weeks, while De Minaur has yet to notch a top-10 victory this season, and unless his legs are 100% with him, he’s not so formidable.

Zverev and Khachanov already squared off twice in August, where Khachanov edged him in Toronto before Zverev struck back in Cincinnati.

If they meet again in New York, I’d make Sascha the favourite to prevail and keep his pursuit of a maiden Slam alive.

Third Quarter: Novak Djokovic chasing a record 25th Grand Slam crown

Seeded players: (4) Taylor Fritz, (7) Novak Djokovic, (11) Holger Rune, (16) Jakub Mensik, (17) Frances Tiafoe, (21) Tomas Machac, (28) Alex Michelsen, (30) Brandon Nakashima

Projected quarterfinal: Taylor Fritz vs Novak Djokovic

This quarter features two of the tournament’s headline acts: last year’s finalist Taylor Fritz and 24-time Major champion Novak Djokovic.

Fritz has been in strong form this summer, highlighted by a run to the Wimbledon semifinals, and has landed in a favourable section of the draw. But his US hard-court swing wasn’t that impressive, so perhaps an early loss wouldn’t be a total surprise.

However, with four qualifiers or lucky losers in his section, he should book a place in the fourth round, where Jakub Mensik (16) could provide a real test.

Djokovic, meanwhile, is bidding to capture his 25th Major title. The Serb has fallen at the semifinal stage of the past three Slams and hasn’t played since Wimbledon, but history suggests he’ll be ready in New York.

He opens against American teenager Learner Tien, which could be a tricky encounter and I can see Tien winning a set, with a potential third-round meeting against either Sebastian Korda or Alex Michelsen. Either could trouble him, but Djokovic’s experience and mental toughness usually see him through.

Frances Tiafoe (17), a two-time semifinalist in the last three years, is another notable threat and could await in the fourth round.

Should Fritz and Djokovic both reach the quarters, the matchup heavily tilts in the Serb’s favour; he owns a 10–0 record over the American.

Fourth Quarter: Carlos Alcaraz on the hunt for his second US Open title

Seeded players: (2) Carlos Alcaraz, (6) Ben Shelton, (12) Casper Ruud, (13) Daniil Medvedev, (18) Alejandro Dadidovich Fokina, (20) Jiri Lehecka, (29) Tallon Griekspoor and (32) Luciano Darderi

Expected quarterfinal: Carlos Alcaraz vs Ben Shelton

Carlos Alcaraz has been nothing short of relentless this season. Since Monte-Carlo in April, the Spaniard has reached the final of every tournament he’s entered, winning five. including the Italian Open, French Open, Wimbledon warm-up in Halle, and most recently, the Cincinnati Open.

He was runner-up in both Barcelona and at Wimbledon, underlining his consistency, which we sometimes forget given his erraticism in some matches.

His campaign begins against big-serving Reilly Opelka, with a potential fourth-round clash against 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev (13) or the dangerous Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (18). Both pose different challenges. Medvedev is out of form, but Davidovich Fokina has his all-court flair—but given Alcaraz’s current form, he’ll be expected to come through.

In the bottom half of the section, Ben Shelton and Casper Ruud are the headline acts. Shelton, fresh off his maiden Masters 1000 title in Canada, looks primed for a strong run and is favoured to get past Ruud (12) should they meet in round four. That would set up a blockbuster quarterfinal between Shelton and Alcaraz.

Interesting First-Round Matches

Alexander Bublik (23) vs Marin Cilic
Sebastian Korda vs Cameron Norrie
Holger Rune (11) vs Botic van de Zandschulp
Lorenzo Musetti (10) vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard
Novak Djokovic (7) vs Learner Tien
Carlos Alcaraz (2) vs Reilly Opelka

Who is your pick for the title?
