I really appreciate your time and guidance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt77iozj000d3b6wd88fj68b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Warmly,\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt77la0w000v3b6wh4w6jgvr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mitchell Tang\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg67600053b6wm6p0wozl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The first may seem simple and to-the-point, but a new study suggests the second is more likely to receive a response from the doctor it was sent to.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg67600063b6wcu3i2xyl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Use of online patient portals to contact doctors has grown in recent years, but researchers have seen that there are <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2816409?utm_campaign=articlePDF&amp;utm_medium=articlePDFlink&amp;utm_source=articlePDF&amp;utm_content=jamanetworkopen.2026.30379#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">significant disparities<\/a> in response rates for historically marginalized groups, such as non-White patients, those without a college education and those who use Medicaid instead of commercial insurance \u2014 especially responses from the doctor intended to receive the message.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg67600073b6wzhr7ay1n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dr. Mitchell Tang, an assistant professor of health policy and management at Columbia University\u2019s Mailman School of Public Health, set out to understand why.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg67600083b6wezfnu1ks@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One possible contributor: writing style.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg67600093b6wudi7lote@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tang\u2019s latest <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/10.1001\/jamanetworkopen.2026.30379?guestAccessKey=4c0f0a12-a9e7-4808-803a-58a8ac22763f&amp;utm_source=for_the_media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_term=082426\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study,<\/a> published Monday in the journal JAMA Network Open, analyzed more than 3 million patient message threads from the Mass General Brigham electronic health record system. Using a sample of 1 million messages, Tang and his colleagues found that differences in writing style \u2014 such as whether a message started with a greeting or how it used puncutation \u2014 accounted for about half of the disparities in response rates for the historically marginalized groups.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg676000a3b6ww0zm8bme@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For healthcare providers, this is a lesson on potential sources of bias, Tang said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg676000b3b6wpifpghey@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI want to be cautious not to victim-blame here,\u201d Tang said. \u201cThe best way of dealing with this is actually to try to improve the system working on the back end.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg676000c3b6w0mz7rexj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tang hopes that his research highlights the need for more education on the clinician side to reduce the disparities in response rates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg676000d3b6wfstexrhr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere is one interpretation of the results where you can say, \u2018Oh, how can we get more patients starting their messages with \u201cDear Dr. Tang?\u201d \u2019 To me, with that finding in particular, I would flip it and say, \u2018Why does this matter in the system?\u2019 \u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt7e2ehm004l3b6w1ug4djll@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cUnlike biases rooted in race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status directly, biases in writing style\u201d may be easier to manage, the study notes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg676000e3b6wn0fr40g5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Changes are already happening to standardize patient portal messaging, and they may make it more efficient for doctors and patients alike.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg676000f3b6wp0me1n8f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe talk about AI tools to help doctors draft their messages,\u201d Tang said. \u201cCould we have AI tools that help patients draft their messages so that we can kind of level the playing field to some degree?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg676000i3b6ws90gcqmv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Use of patient portal messages has jumped since 2020, while phone calls have declined. That overwhelming amount of messages may make it harder to respond and raises concerns about physician workload and burnout.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg676000j3b6w19nkpg81@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Doctors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/practice-management\/digital-health\/what-doctors-want-patients-know-about-using-patient-portal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told the American Medical Association<\/a> that simply scheduling an appointment may be a better option for more involved questions. If something takes more than a single message to type out, odds are it would be better to call the doctor\u2019s office and schedule a visit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg676000k3b6w2w8lvbgb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s also important for patients to know that messages sent through an online patient portal may not go straight to your doctor. Instead, they may first go through a kind of triage system, where they may be assessed by a medical assistant or a nurse before being answered or forwarded on to the intended recipient.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt77ujlt001y3b6wl1wz9bez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPortal messages shouldn\u2019t be used for urgent needs,\u201d Tang told CNN in an email. \u201cThe patient should be comfortable with the idea of getting a response within 2 business days (though many will get responded to sooner). If the need is more urgent than that, then they should probably call.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg677000n3b6wyehz6ggz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The new study identified some writing style characteristics in messages that were more likely to get a response. It looked only at one health system, and it included only messages written in English, so its findings won\u2019t relate to every system or doctor\u2019s office. It also didn\u2019t track other methods to respond to patients, like a follow-up phone call instead of a portal response.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg677000p3b6wjs08mhnx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study found that the first sentence of a message may be one of the most important. Messages starting with \u201cDear Dr. (Last Name)\u201d were more likely to get the target clinician response, and messages that included the clinician\u2019s first name got even better response rates \u2014 nearly double as likely as those with no greeting at all.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg677000q3b6wujr9ql3l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you start your message with \u2018Dear Dr. Tang,\u2019 we find that it\u2019s much more likely that Dr. Tang is ultimately the one who responds to you,\u201d Tang said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg677000s3b6waae3jcgz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Messages with expressive punctuation also got better response rates from the target clinician \u2014 and the more expressive, the better. Multiple question marks and multiple exclamation marks secured better rates than single marks, which secured better rates than none.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg677000t3b6w6a1fgicv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt adds some like color to it, somehow, that seems to be treated differently,\u201d Tang said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg677000v3b6wq4608cem@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even in messages discussing what could be concerning health topics, the inclusion of positive sentiment \u2014 like that your condition is improving \u2014 seemed to improve response rate. But negative sentiment \u2013\u2014 such as expressing frustration or sadness \u2014 slightly decreased it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3hg677000x3b6wopycc423@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many providers would suggest clear, concise messages from their patients.
