\n\tTaylor Swift opened up about the process<\/a> of writing and recording her 2012 hit \u201cI Knew You Were Trouble,\u201d revealing that it was initially penned as a \u201creally sad ballad\u201d before she was encouraged to incorporate dubstep.<\/p>\n

\n\tSwift reflected on the song\u2019s creation during a Q&A at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles last week, moderated by Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. The conversation, held as part of the Museum\u2019s Icon Sessions, included Mason Jr. asking Swift how she prefers to build production around her lyrics and storytelling to create the \u201cright mood and vibe.\u201d<\/p>\n

#TaylorSwift<\/a> reveals that \u201cI Knew You Were Trouble\u201d started as a \u201csad piano ballad\u201d until Max Martin and Shellback suggested, \u201cWhat if it\u2019s dubstep?\u201d<\/p>\n

Swift adds that it ended up being \u201cthe best thing\u201d that could have happened to the song.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt can either be compelling to make a song sound exactly how it feels or to flip it, which the people that really taught me the most about that are Max Martin and Shellback,\u201d said Swift in a clip from the event. The best example of this, she noted, was \u201cI Knew You Were Trouble,\u201d which she originally had written as a \u201csad piano ballad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was really excited to bring it in and I played them this really, really sad ballad and I was like I think just no drums and they\u2019re like, \u2018What if it\u2019s dubstep?’\u201d she recalled. \u201cI was like I don\u2019t know, guys. Let\u2019s give it a run. I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSwift explained that in the end, it \u201cended up being the best thing for it, and I think as a collaborator, my favorite people to be in the room with are \u2018Yes, and?\u2019 people. So why not try it. If they heard it and they thought dubstep, and I came to them specifically because I didn\u2019t want to be making lateral moves creatively, why wouldn\u2019t we go down that path? Why wouldn\u2019t we? I really think that enthusiasm in the studio, it can really make or break what you end up creating.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI Knew You Were Trouble\u201d was part of a decided shift for Swift, who embraced a more pop-oriented sound on the song\u2019s parent album \u201cRed.\u201d The experimentation paid off, as \u201cTrouble\u201d bowed at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and inevitably reached a peak of No. 2.<\/p>\n
