Shiyazh Pete is an undrafted rookie offensive lineman for the Dallas Cowboys who may not make the team.<\/p>\n

Yet on Saturday night, in the moments after a 34-13 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Pete provided one of the indelible moments of the preseason, delivering a postgame locker room speech that lasted just 59 words and succinctly distilled one of sport\u2019s oldest psychological ideas about shared identity and shared sacrifice.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, that was an incredible win,\u201d Pete said, standing before his teammates. \u201cI am very fortunate to be amongst you and to play in the same field, with the same star, holding on our chest, and I\u2019m proud of us, proud of how far we\u2019ve come. Oh, man.<\/p>\n

\u201cFate brought us here as strangers, but this game, this star, this team, will make us brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pete\u2019s cadence was measured and heartfelt. His tone was equal parts solemn and sincere. The final line may have been a riff on a quote from Halo 2, a popular video game, but it was still hard to imagine a 23-year-old speaking with more gravitas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe room went crazy just because he spoke from the heart,\u201d Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters.<\/p>\n

Pete\u2019s words quickly went viral. They seemed to resonate, in part, because they felt authentic, infused with a measure of vulnerability, just another piece of a unique background for an NFL lineman.<\/p>\n

Born on the Flathead Indian Reservation, Pete grew up in Missoula, Mont., where his mother was studying to become a school psychologist and his father was in the military. He later played high school football in Shiprock, N.M., before walking onto the team at New Mexico State. After four years, he transferred to Kentucky, where he started 12 games at left tackle.<\/p>\n

When he joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent, he became the first member of the Navajo Nation to sign with an NFL team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m realizing I\u2019m one of the first individuals within that community to do so,\u201d Pete told reporters earlier this year<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cAnd it\u2019s a little bit surreal. I realize I\u2019m a public figure now and I must act accordingly, and that carries some responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Pete received a standing ovation from members of the Navajo Nation who were in the stadium in Glendale, Ariz. But it was his way with words that drew the most attention, including his ability to capture the complex dynamics of social identity theory and express them in a surprisingly sophisticated fashion.<\/p>\n

In the 1970s and 80s, social psychologists Henri Tajfel and John Turner developed the idea that humans do not only think in terms of, Who am I? They also ask the question, Who are we?<\/p>\n

In this case, the players are Cowboys. But Pete took the idea one step further, taking the organization\u2019s iconic symbol \u2014 the star \u2014 and suffusing it with a deeper meaning.<\/p>\n

This game, this star, this team, will make us brothers.<\/p>\n

Pete spoke with a deep emotional intelligence \u2014 a blend of confidence and humility \u2014 shifting from the first person to the collective \u201cwe.\u201d In the process, he took a personal moment and turned it into a simple rallying cry.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe talked about how this family has brought us all together, and now we\u2019re bonded for life,\u201d Schottenheimer said.<\/p>\n

Of course, it wasn\u2019t the first time that Pete had shown off his gift for rhetoric. Before last season, when Pete was at Kentucky, a reporter told him<\/a> that at least one media member had predicted the Wildcats to finish second-to-last in the 16-team SEC.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey make it sound like we\u2019re a lost cause,\u201d Pete said. \u201cBut then I\u2019d argue lost causes are the only things worth fighting for.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that what I\u2019m doing \u2014 what we\u2019re doing here \u2014 is worthwhile.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Saturday, he spoke a similar message, just with a bigger platform.<\/p>\n
