Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Saturday the counter-tariffs would kick in on Sept. 8.<\/p>\n
Carney suspended trade talks with the United States late Friday, accusing the U.S. of trying to introduce last-minute demands which would limit Canada\u2019s ability to make trade deals with other countries and protect its culture and sovereignty.<\/p>\n
The U.S. introduced a new round of 50 per cent tariffs<\/a> on Canadian exports on Saturday, targeting goods worth $28 billion.<\/p>\n Canada will go back to the negotiating table on a trade deal once the United States changes its attitude and stops treating Canada as a subsidiary, Carney said Monday.<\/p>\n Carney held a news conference in L\u00e9vis, Que., where he announced an $11-billion contract to build six new icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard, emphasizing they would be built with Canadian steel.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen the Americans go to the negotiation table first, with the right attitude toward our industries and a true partnership, of course we\u2019ll come to the negotiating table,\u201d Carney told reporters.<\/p>\n \u201cAn attitude at the negotiation table that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States, that Canadian industry is going to be disadvantaged relative to American industry, that we are going to set up terms so that over time Canadian industry is going to face constant headwinds, that\u2019s not something we\u2019re going to accept.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd that\u2019s before you get to constraints on our ability to do what the rest of the world wants, which is to sign trade deals with Canada. And that\u2019s before the fundamental issues on culture.\u201d<\/p>\n Before Carney spoke, U.S. President Donald Trump escalated the war, at least with words, this time posting a threat on social media to hike tariffs on all vehicles, auto parts and steel from Canada to 50 per cent on Jan. 1. He made a second post threatening Canadian energy flowing through the United States.<\/p>\n \u201cRemember, much of the Electricity, Oil, and Gas that Canada gets is transported through the U.S.A. Someone should get these clowns to \u2018fall in line\u2019 or, the consequences for Canada will be far WORSE!\u201d Trump posted.<\/p>\n Trump also reiterated previous accusations that Canada has been \u201cripping\u201d the U.S. off for years, and repeated his insistence that the U.S. does not need anything from Canada.<\/p>\n \u201cThey feel entitled, and yet, WE DON\u2019T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!\u201d Trump posted.<\/p>\n Premier Ford and Trump go back and forth<\/p>\n Canada is the largest source of energy imported by the U.S., and supplies about 90 per cent of the potash it uses in agricultural fertilizers and as much as one-third of the uranium used by American nuclear power plants.<\/p>\n Trump also claimed Canada is reliant on the U.S. for 95 per cent of its exports, but Canadian data shows that in 2025, Canadian exports to the United States represented 72 per cent of all exports that year. That was down four percentage points from the year before.\u00a0<\/p>\n In the first six months of 2026, that number fell further to 68 per cent, while non-U.S. exports rose as Canada moved to diversify its trade away from its largest trading partner south of the border.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/93a364a89bce1aff5df99c109e7e60699cb0ec984d43906f15386cd44fcadd72-1024x682.jpg\")
