{"id":871198,"date":"2026-08-25T18:38:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T18:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/871198\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T18:38:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T18:38:12","slug":"canada-to-tariff-u-s-dairy-honey-agriculture-equipment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/871198\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada to tariff U.S. dairy, honey, agriculture equipment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UPDATED \u2013 The organization representing Saskatchewan farmers is calling on the Federal government to protect agricultural inputs as the trade war between Canada and the U.S. escalates.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government will match the United States dollar for dollar and product by product with retaliatory tariffs, the federal minister of finance announced Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor affected honey producers, the impact is immediate,\u201d said Bill Prybylski, president of <a href=\"https:\/\/apas.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan<\/a> (APAS) in a news release, Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA 50 per cent tariff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manitobacooperator.ca\/livestock\/manitoba-beekeepers-centre-of-canadian-honey-trade-risk-united-states-tariff-deadline-counts-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">effectively closes the U.S. market<\/a>, while displaced sales could place downward pressure on Canadian prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uncertainty around markets, inputs and retaliation make it tough for farm businesses to plan, invest and manage risk, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tw:text-base tw:font-normal tw:text-neutral-950 tw:m-0\">Some Canadian farmers, such as beekeepers, find themselves hit with massive U.S. tariffs, while agricultural sectors not directly implicated may feel knock-on effects like machinery costs.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agcanada.com\/daily\/u-s-hits-canadian-goods-with-50-per-cent-tariffs-after-trade-talks-fail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">imposed 50 per cent tariffs<\/a> on $27.6 billion of Canadian goods, including dairy, honey, alcohol and wool and wool products, after the two countries failed to reach a trade deal after days of negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>    Read Also<\/p>\n<p>                    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.producer.com\/news\/industry-leaders-dispute-central-claim-in-honey-tariff-letter\/\" data-click=\"gfm-click-tracking\" data-module-id=\"ARTICLE_SNEAK_PEAK\" data-module-name=\"Read Also\" data-module-location=\"Inside Content\" data-page-type=\"Single Page\" class=\"tw:shrink-0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"winter-article-sneak-peak--image tw:w-32 tw:h-24 tw:shrink-0 lazyload\" width=\"128\" height=\"96\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/367521_web1_Honey13-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"Honeybees crawl on the honeycombs of a frame from a bee hive.\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 128px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 128\/96;\"\/><br \/>\n            <\/a><\/p>\n<p>What is tariffed?<\/p>\n<p>Starting Sept. 8, Canada will levy counter-tariffs of 15, 20 and 50 per cent on products drawn from those targetted by U.S. Section 338 and Section 232 tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>The duties cover $27.6 billion of American goods in sectors such as dairy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agcanada.com\/daily\/canadian-agriculture-in-limbo-yet-again-after-trade-deal-collapses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">agriculture equipment<\/a>, steel, pulp and paper and those that are \u201cmost impacted by U.S. tariffs,\u201d a federal news release said.<\/p>\n<p>Agricultural goods implicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-finance\/news\/2026\/08\/list-of-products-from-the-united-states-subject-to-counter-tariffs-effective-september-8-2026.html#wb-auto-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">include<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Milk, cream and dairy ingredients at 50 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Natural honey (50 per cent).<\/p>\n<p>Various types of cheese at 25 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Molasses (50 per cent).<\/p>\n<p>Baking mixes and doughs (50 per cent).<\/p>\n<p>Wool products.<\/p>\n<p>Various types of fish and fish products (25 per cent).<\/p>\n<p>Harvesting or threshing machinery \u2014mowers and parts \u2014 at 15 to 25 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous steel and aluminum products are also tariffed, which could have implications for farm equipment. <\/p>\n<p>The federal government also announced a $7.5 billion aid package for affected businesses and workers.<\/p>\n<p>Farmers shouldn\u2019t \u201cpay twice\u201d: APAS<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada must defend its economic interests, but farmers should not be required to pay twice\u2014first<br \/>through lost export markets and then through higher production costs,\u201d said Prybylski.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgricultural machinery, replacement parts and essential inputs must be protected, particularly where Canadian alternatives are not readily available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>APAS called for the federal government to consult with agriculture groups, exclude essential farm machinery and parts, and to provide assistance for honey producers and other affected sectors.<\/p>\n<p>It also called on the government to resume negotiations with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aem.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Association of Equipment Manufacturers<\/a> also called on both governments to resume talks and to remove \u201charmful tariffs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada and the United States have built the world\u2019s most integrated manufacturing ecosystem, supporting jobs, driving investment, and powering economic growth across North America,\u201d said Kip Eideberg, senior vice-president of government and industry relations, in a statement to Glacier FarmMedia.<\/p>\n<p>The association represents manufacturers on both sides of the border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContinued trade uncertainty and escalating tariffs create serious challenges for manufacturers and the businesses that depend on cross-border supply chains,\u201d Eideberg said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"UPDATED \u2013 The organization representing Saskatchewan farmers is calling on the Federal government to protect agricultural inputs as&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":871199,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[49,48,894,44,15634,4992,6961],"class_list":["post-871198","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-canada","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-federal-government","tag-news","tag-retaliatory-tariffs","tag-tariffs","tag-trade-dispute"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/871198","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=871198"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/871198\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/871199"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=871198"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=871198"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=871198"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
