The 21-year-old defenceman transferred to Arizona State in the spring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe entire Blues organization is keeping Matthew Mayich close to our hearts as we pray for his comfort and recovery while he continues to undergo medical treatment in Arizona,\u201d Blues president Doug Armstrong said in a statement. \u201cHis agent has kept us informed about Matthew\u2019s medical status over the last week and we extend our deepest support to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The OHL also released a statement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cOur thoughts are with Matthew, his parents John and Christina and the entire Mayich family,\u201d commissioner Bryan Crawford said. \u201cMatthew spent four seasons in our league and earned the respect of everyone he played with and against. The entire Ontario Hockey League is thinking of him and pulling for him, and we are keeping his family close in our thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Earlier in the day, the vice-president of media relations for ASU<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7535802\/2026\/08\/26\/matthew-mayich-hockey-player-collapses-workout-arizona-state\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7535802\/2026\/08\/26\/matthew-mayich-hockey-player-collapses-workout-arizona-state\/\"> confirmed to The Athletic\u2019s Katie Strang and Jeremy Rutherford<\/a> that the school was investigating the specifics of the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cA student-athlete who collapsed during an outdoor exercise Thursday morning remains hospitalized,\u201d Chris Fiscus said. \u201cThe student-athlete, a member of the ASU hockey team, is not being named by the university because of privacy interests.
