{"id":872823,"date":"2026-08-27T02:42:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T02:42:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/872823\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T02:42:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T02:42:16","slug":"radical-overhaul-to-milk-production-would-use-up-to-96-less-land-than-cows-study-suggests-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/872823\/","title":{"rendered":"Radical Overhaul to Milk Production Would Use Up to 96% Less Land Than Cows, Study Suggests : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost half of all habitable land on Earth is <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/global-land-for-agriculture\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">used for agriculture<\/a>, and most of that is dominated by livestock farming, which not only monopolizes land, but has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-key-meat-protein-has-been-grown-in-lettuce-for-the-first-time\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-key-meat-protein-has-been-grown-in-lettuce-for-the-first-time\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">numerous negative impacts<\/a> on the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Yet despite the size and environmental burden of animal farms, animal agriculture, including dairy production, only provides about <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/environmental-impacts-of-food?insight=half-of-the-worlds-habitable-land-is-used-for-agriculture#key-insights\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">17 percent<\/a> of global calories consumed and just one-third of the protein we eat.<\/p>\n<p>Given the disparity, there&#8217;s huge interest in finding more efficient farming solutions for the foods we need, all aside from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-calculated-how-much-meat-you-can-sustainably-eat-in-a-week\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">looming sustainability concerns<\/a> associated with animal farming.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fsufs.2026.1692819\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems<\/a>, scientists in the UK quantified a dramatic alternative to conventional milk production, with the ultimate potential to free up huge amounts of land currently used for dairy cattle.<\/p>\n<p>If the UK were to replace traditional dairy milk with milk produced by a technique called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Precision_fermentation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">precision fermentation<\/a>, the land footprint would be up to 96 percent lower than that of cow&#8217;s milk, researchers estimate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By avoiding raising animals and growing their feed, the land-sparing potential of precision fermentation [milk products] could be substantial,&#8221; environmental scientist Jade A. Warren from Imperial College London and colleagues <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fsufs.2026.1692819\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fsufs.2026.1692819\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write in their paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MilkDairyCalcium.jpg\" alt=\"Daily Glass of Milk May Reduce Bowel Cancer Risk by Up to 14%, Study Shows\" class=\"wp-image-148920\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Could precision fermentation replace all dairy cow milk production? (Goran13\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Precision fermentation uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csiro.au\/en\/about\/challenges-missions\/future-protein-mission\/novel-protein-production-systems\/precision-fermentation\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.csiro.au\/en\/about\/challenges-missions\/future-protein-mission\/novel-protein-production-systems\/precision-fermentation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">genetically engineered microbes<\/a> such as yeast or fungi to produce ingredients, including the dairy proteins found in cow&#8217;s milk.<\/p>\n<p>Aspects of the process have been used since the 1980s, but recent advances in technology are leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.fufo.2025.100750\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new kinds of food production possibilities<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-new-dairy-alternative-is-made-from-real-milk-proteins-but-with-no-cows-required\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">viable alternatives to cow&#8217;s milk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In those formulations, milk proteins are added to a mix of plant-based fats and sugars \u2013 so there&#8217;s no lactose or cholesterol \u2013 plus many of the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-are-vitamins-and-do-we-really-need-to-take-them\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73116\" data-postid=\"215741\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">vitamins<\/a> and minerals you would usually find in cow&#8217;s milk.<\/p>\n<p>Due to its potential, precision fermentation has been studied from an environmental perspective, but mostly in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s11367-022-02087-0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms of its carbon footprint<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In their own study, Warren and colleagues focused on the benefits that precision fermentation could offer to land usage in the UK, calculating the amount of land needed to produce 1 metric ton of precision fermentation milk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?int_promo=stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-201722\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They then compared this to the amount of land used for dairy cow grazing \u2013 and the cropland used to grow their feed \u2013 to produce the same amount of milk.<\/p>\n<p>The results were striking.<\/p>\n<p>Replacing just 20 percent of the UK&#8217;s annual milk production with precision fermentation milk would free up an estimated average of 859 kilohectares (8,590 square kilometers, or about 3,320 square miles) of land currently used for dairy milk production.<\/p>\n<p>Moving to a 50\/50 split would more than double the amount of land freed up. And completely replacing dairy milk production with precision fermentation would give the UK back an estimated 4,294 kilohectares of land \u2013 an area the size of mainland Denmark. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This land could be used for various purposes, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/we-must-rewild-a-billion-hectares-to-combat-climate-change-warns-un-report\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rewilding<\/a>, providing settlement or producing food for the growing UK population,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fsufs.2026.1692819\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the researchers write<\/a>, also noting the land releases could more than satisfy national targets to reduce and repurpose agricultural land use <a href=\"https:\/\/consult.defra.gov.uk\/land-use-framework\/land-use-consultation\/supporting_documents\/Land%20Use%20Consultation.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in accordance with net zero goals by 2050<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/restoring-forests-should-be-as-easy-as-letting-trees-plant-themselves\" data-type=\"2020\/12\/18\" data-id=\"45965\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Best Way to Restore Forests May Not Actually Involve Planting Trees<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The researchers also say the move to precision fermentation could help fill in a gap in the <a href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/cbp-9888\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/cbp-9888\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UK&#8217;s net zero goals<\/a>, which call for agricultural land to be freed up to restore forests and peatlands by 2050, but don&#8217;t explicitly explain how that can be achieved without producing less food.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the political sensitivity around dietary change,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fsufs.2026.1692819\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the researchers write<\/a>, &#8220;precision fermentation, which can be used to produce identical proteins with potentially much lower land demands than their animal-derived counterparts, could help policymakers navigate this challenge and overcome inertia around reducing animal agriculture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While this study focused on the UK, the researchers say their findings could have global implications, helping countries all around the world to free up land used in animal agriculture and repurpose it towards greener ends.<\/p>\n<p>In a world where <a href=\"https:\/\/fil-idf.org\/dairys-global-impact\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">milk consumption is rising<\/a>, something has to give.<\/p>\n<p>The findings are reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fsufs.2026.1692819\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This article was fact-checked by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/rachel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rachel Garner<\/a> and edited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/clare-watson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clare Watson<\/a>.
