That all changed when he began to acquire plants (at one point numbering in the hundreds) and arranging them. At the same time, Vaarma was becoming increasingly fascinated with creating visual art, with both his floral arranging and painting feeding into a newfound passion for life.

Now, Vaarma is pursuing that passion for the fullest in Winnipeg with his new gallery space, El Rosa Mexicano. The gallery, which just opened on Albert Street this month, combines both the flowers and the painting in a kaleidoscopic display of colours and smells that mirror Vaarma’s passion.

“I think it’s Deepak Chopra that says that universe is a fireworks show to celebrate existence,” says Vaarma. “I’m trying to make my arrangements or floral sculptures a fireworks show to celebrate life.”

Rooted in cultural representation

Vaarma came to Canada via Mexico through the United States.
