{"id":874036,"date":"2026-08-28T02:46:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T02:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/874036\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T02:46:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T02:46:12","slug":"ghost-in-the-machine-physicists-measure-the-eerie-glow-from-shut-down-nuclear-reactors-for-the-first-time-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/874036\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghost in The Machine: Physicists Measure The Eerie &#8216;Glow&#8217; From Shut-Down Nuclear Reactors For The First Time : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/ultra-rare-asian-unicorn-has-genome-sequenced-and-it-could-mean-everything\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Unicorns<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/for-some-reason-bigfoot-sightings-keep-showing-up-around-bear-hangouts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bigfoot<\/a>, and banshees have been scientifically debunked, but ghosts are real \u2013 kind of.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The exceptionally elusive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/neutrinos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">neutrinos<\/a> and their counterpart antineutrinos are known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/its-official-ghost-particle-that-smashed-into-earth-breaks-records\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ghost particles<\/a> because they almost never interact with matter, due to their lack of electric charge and near-nonexistent mass.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet these phantasmal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-standard-model\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fundamental particles<\/a> can help improve nuclear safeguards by providing a non-intrusive way to examine the goings-on inside nuclear reactors \u2013 including the spectral flux of antineutrinos after a power plant has been switched off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a recent breakthrough, physicists measured this residual emission for the first time, detecting the dim, eerie glow of electron antineutrinos emanating from the darkness of slumbering nuclear reactor cores in France.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Led by physicists from the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics (MPIK), researchers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpi-hd.mpg.de\/lin\/research_dc.en.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Double Chooz Collaboration<\/a> have experimentally validated this predicted flux, emanating from burnt fuel inside two reactors as well as the removed waste material placed in cooling pools. This flux has been theoretically constrained but never measured.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"815\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/StandardModelParticlePhysicsLogo2-1-815x675.jpg\" alt=\"Ghost in The Machine: Physicists Measure The Eerie 'Glow' From Shut-Down Nuclear Reactors For The First Time\" class=\"wp-image-215924\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-standard-model\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73024\" data-postid=\"215916\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Standard Model<\/a> that describes the fundamental make-up of the Universe and its myriad particles. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-standard-model\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(ScienceAlert)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Until now, reactor antineutrino experiments have mainly focused on operating reactors, where the antineutrino flux is much larger,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpi-hd.mpg.de\/mpi\/en\/public-relations\/news\/news-item\/first-measurement-of-antineutrinos-from-spent-nuclear-fuel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Anthony Onillon, a physicist at MPIK and one of the study&#8217;s co-leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Detecting the tiny residual signal after shutdown required exceptionally low backgrounds and careful analysis techniques developed by the Double Chooz collaboration over many years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Double Chooz experiment operated from 2011 to 2017, exploring the unimaginably immense amount of antineutrinos produced at the Chooz Nuclear Power Station in northern France.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"899\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/csm_DCsitenew_4f89ab5ffb-899x675.jpg\" alt=\"Ghost in The Machine: Physicists Measure The Eerie 'Glow' From Shut-Down Nuclear Reactors For The First Time\" class=\"wp-image-215926\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>An illustration of the site of the experiment, detailing the reactors and the detectors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpi-hd.mpg.de\/mpi\/en\/public-relations\/news\/news-item\/first-measurement-of-antineutrinos-from-spent-nuclear-fuel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(Double Chooz Collaboration)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Double Chooz utilized two underground detectors at average distances of 400 meters (1,300 feet) and 1,050 meters (3,400 feet) from the power station&#8217;s two operating reactors to study a weird property incomprehensible in the macroscopic world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"544\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/medium-544x675.png\" alt=\"Ghost in The Machine: Physicists Measure The Eerie 'Glow' From Shut-Down Nuclear Reactors For The First Time\" class=\"wp-image-215922\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A schematic illustration showing the Double Chooz setup. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1103\/dr26-j19g\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(Abrah\u00e3o et al., Physical Review Letters, 2026)<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/neutrinos\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73028\" data-postid=\"215916\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Neutrinos<\/a> and antineutrinos change their flavor, or their type, as they travel, through a process called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/most-precise-measure-ever-brings-us-closer-to-knowing-the-ghost-particles-true-mass\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oscillation<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/most-precise-measure-ever-brings-us-closer-to-knowing-the-ghost-particles-true-mass\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s like buying chocolate ice cream and having it morph into vanilla and then into strawberry as it goes from store, to home, to bowl, Fermilab physicists <a href=\"https:\/\/neutrinos.fnal.gov\/types\/flavor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explain<\/a>, inventing Quantum Neapolitan in the process.<a href=\"https:\/\/neutrinos.fnal.gov\/sources\/reactor-neutrinos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/neutrinos.fnal.gov\/sources\/reactor-neutrinos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">physicists can&#8217;t actually &#8216;see&#8217; antineutrinos<\/a>; they can only tease out their existence based on their interaction with other particles within delicately designed detectors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Antineutrinos interact only extremely rarely with matter,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpi-hd.mpg.de\/mpi\/en\/public-relations\/news\/news-item\/first-measurement-of-antineutrinos-from-spent-nuclear-fuel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> Thierry Lasserre, a physicist at MPIK.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, when one interacts within the Double Chooz detector, a characteristic double-light signal is produced that can be distinguished from background events.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For another food-based analogy, picture a collision between a truck full of Mentos and one full of cola, creating a telltale <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mixing-mentos-and-coke-on-a-mountain-top-shows-why-it-s-the-candy-for-the-job\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fountain of fizz<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/neutrinos.fnal.gov\/types\/flavor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When a  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/neutrinos\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73028\" data-postid=\"215916\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">neutrino<\/a> or antineutrino passes through the Double Chooz detector, it sometimes smashes into a proton within the &#8220;liquid scintillator&#8221; in the detectors&#8217; inner chamber. <\/p>\n<p>This collision generates a neutron and a positron, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/antimatter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">antimatter<\/a> counterpart of an electron. The positron instantly annihilates with a surrounding electron, generating a flash of light facilitated by the scintillator.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpi-hd.mpg.de\/lin\/research_dc.en.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The neutron is captured by gadolinium, a silvery, rare-earth metal element within the scintillator, producing a second flash of light to offer &#8216;two-factor authentication&#8217; of the antineutrino event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"899\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/csm_DC_bba497cd89-899x675.jpg\" alt=\"Ghost in The Machine: Physicists Measure The Eerie 'Glow' From Shut-Down Nuclear Reactors For The First Time\" class=\"wp-image-215927\"  \/>An illustration of a Double Chooz detector. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpi-hd.mpg.de\/mpi\/en\/public-relations\/news\/news-item\/first-measurement-of-antineutrinos-from-spent-nuclear-fuel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(Double Chooz Collaboration)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This event is called inverse beta-decay (IBD), and it happens a lot in reactors during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-is-nuclear-fission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fission<\/a> of elements like uranium and plutonium. It represents the biggest source of human-made antineutrinos, and tracking this flux can prove invaluable to informing nuclear safety and perhaps analyzing the shifting composition of these fuel materials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the study, the researchers observed an excess of IBD events across the energy range where the desired residual emission signal is likely to peak.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?int_promo=stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-201722\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During 17.2 days of observation during which both Chooz reactor cores were switched off, the researchers found a &#8220;very good agreement&#8221; between the measured and expected antineutrino events \u2013 specifically, 106 \u00b118 measured events compared with 88 \u00b17 predicted events.
