Mate Rimac, CEO of both Bugatti<\/a> and Rimac, opened up about the future of supercars<\/a>, and it\u2019s probably brighter than we thought.<\/p>\n Rimac is a unique case study.<\/p>\n He\u2019s much younger than most of his peers, and he\u2019s at the helm of two companies that couldn\u2019t be more different.<\/p>\n And this probably makes his take even more interesting.<\/p>\n Why Mate Rimac isn\u2019t just another CEO<\/p>\n At some point in the recent past, automakers decided the person at the helm, the CEO, had to be a car guy, not a marketing guy.<\/p>\n If you look at CEOs 30 or 40 years ago, most of them could\u2019ve done the same job at Nestl\u00e9 or Rolex.<\/p>\n Today, they couldn\u2019t, because they\u2019re engineers first, CEOs second.<\/p>\n They know cars, then corporate.<\/p>\n Not the other way around.<\/p>\n And by the way, this trend is spilling over into other industries.<\/p>\n Apple, for example, will replace its outgoing CEO \u2013 Tim Cook, a corporate guy \u2013 with John Ternus, who\u2019s an engineer.<\/p>\n Mate Rimac is in that category, but he\u2019s an \u2018anomaly\u2019 for three reasons.<\/p>\n First, he seems to genuinely love cars<\/a> and has a car collection<\/a> that goes far beyond the brand he owns<\/a>; second, he\u2019s much younger than most of his peers; and third, he\u2019s running both Bugatti and Rimac.<\/p>\n To be clear, though, they\u2019re technically the same company.<\/p>\n The irony is that Rimac, a software-driven<\/a>, all-electric brand, eventually merged with Bugatti, which is almost the exact opposite.<\/p>\n It gets better when you realize that these two companies were founded exactly 100 years apart \u2013 in 2009 and 1909 respectively.<\/p>\n That\u2019s why Mate\u2019s take on the car world is interesting.<\/p>\n Yes, internal combustion supercars are here to stay<\/p>\n Despite running a company that makes EVs, Mate believes that high-end luxury cars and especially supercars will continue to use internal combustion engines.<\/p>\n The reason is simple: that\u2019s what customers want.<\/p>\n He\u2019s not alone.<\/p>\n Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, BMW, and a few other brands said \u2013 on more than one occasion \u2013 that their customers are not that interested in EVs.<\/p>\n They want EVs, but they also want \u2018regular\u2019 gas cars.<\/p>\n Speaking to CNBC<\/a>, Mate said that supercars will be like Swiss watches.<\/p>\n \u201cFor normal cars, normal people, the vast majority will be electric,\u201d Mate said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe upper segment, like sports cars and upwards, are going to stay combustion for a very long time, exactly like watches. Only like 5 percent of watches are made in Switzerland, but that\u2019s where 90 percent of profits are made. An Apple Watch or any kind of smart watch can do so many more things.
