If the animal has seen or smelled you, remain calm and avoid direct eye contact.  <\/p>\n<p>Give the animal lots of room and space to get away, back away from the animal but do not run, and if you must speak, do so calmly and firmly.<\/p>\n<p>If the animal has not seen you, back away quietly and leave the area while staying downwind of the animal.  Keep and eye on the animal and never get between a bear and her cubs. <\/p>\n<p>Black bear sightings should be reported to the local forest management office in Lewisporte at 709-541-0214.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"&#13; (Stock photo.)
