{"id":874677,"date":"2026-08-28T15:06:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T15:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/874677\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T15:06:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T15:06:25","slug":"maple-lodge-farms-severe-carbon-dioxide-exposure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/874677\/","title":{"rendered":"Maple Lodge Farms: Severe carbon dioxide exposure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Maple Lodge Farms Ltd. has been hit with a $500,000 fine after a worker at its Brampton, Ont., plant was critically injured when they were exposed to more than 16,000 pounds of carbon dioxide back in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A court bulletin posted by the Ontario government <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/court\/1007949\/carbon-dioxide-related-injury-results-in-500000-fine-for-brampton-food-manufacturer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/court\/1007949\/carbon-dioxide-related-injury-results-in-500000-fine-for-brampton-food-manufacturer\">on Thursday<\/a> stated the incident happened at the Maple Lodge Farms Ltd. poultry processing and packaging facility located on Winston Churchill Boulevard. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">On March 16, 2024, the employee was working in the facility\u2019s deli area when a hose, connected to a vacuum blender containing carbon dioxide, ruptured. Carbon dioxide is used to cool certain products during process, the bulletin noted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The rupture uncontrollably released around 16,072 pounds of carbon dioxide into the deli area and the worker was critically injured, according to the bulletin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Following an investigation conducted by the province\u2019s labour ministry, it was determined there was no carbon dioxide sensor and alarm system in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThis was a failure to take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of a worker,\u201d the bulletin reads, adding that Maple Lodge Farms failed to comply with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/statute\/90o01#BK52\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">section 25(2)(h) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The facility installed a permanent carbon dioxide sensor following the incident. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Following a guilty plea heard in a Brampton court on Aug. 27, Maple Lodge Farms was slapped with a $500,000 fine.
